Memorial Day
A huge congratulations to eighth-grader Thomas Kushman, who brilliantly represented Doherty Middle School at the town’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. As a dedicated member of the Principal’s Student Advisory Council, Thomas was selected for the distinct honor of reading Abraham Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg Address.
We are incredibly proud of how beautifully he represented the spirit and leadership of our Doherty community on such a meaningful day. Way to go, Thomas!

Rolling Out the Red Carpet:
On Tuesday morning, Doherty Middle School was buzzing with excitement as we officially welcomed our rising 6th graders from Bancroft and South!
Our amazing 8th-grade WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Leaders rolled out the proverbial red carpet to ensure our incoming students felt right at home from the moment they stepped through the doors. It was a wonderful morning filled with high-fives, school tours, icebreakers, and plenty of Doherty spirit.
Transitioning to middle school is a big milestone, but with our dedicated WEB Leaders guiding the way, the future 6th graders are already off to a fantastic start. Thank you to everyone who made this warm welcome possible—we can’t wait to see these new faces in the halls this fall!

🏆 Doherty Mathletes Shine!
We have some phenomenal news to share from our math department! Doherty Middle School has officially earned the prestigious 2026 Showcase High Achievement Award from MathCounts.
Out of approximately 240 participating schools nationwide, Doherty scored an incredible 115 out of 160. To put this achievement into perspective, only 86 middle schools across the entire country—and just 4 in Massachusetts—received this honor. A shiny new trophy is on its way to Doherty to recognize this stellar accomplishment!
❤️ A Huge Thank You! This incredible milestone wouldn't have been possible without dedication outside the classroom. A massive shoutout and thank you to Doherty parent Govind Srinivasan for inspiring this team to victory.
Go Doherty!

Holly Thompson
On Friday, May 29, Doherty welcomed author Holly Thompson for a special visit with our 6th-grade students.
Ms. Thompson shared some of her work and took time to answer student questions about writing. She then challenged the students to write an original poem about a favorite activity, focusing specifically on using strong verbs.
To wrap up the visit, several 6th graders proudly shared their newly composed poems with the room. Thank you, Ms. Thompson, for inspiring our young writers!
8th Grade Farewell Ceremony
Our 8th Grade Farewell Ceremony will be on the last of school, Wednesday June 17, 2026.
The Ceremony will be held in the DMS Auditorium and will begin at 8:30am.
Library News
Hello DMS Families,
As we come to the end of the school year, the library has stopped lending books and has started collecting any outstanding and overdue book returns. The last day to check out books was Thursday, May 21st. The school librarian would appreciate any efforts at home to find overdue books and get them in the Doherty Library book drop prior to June 8th. After that date, bills will be sent home to families for the cost of the unreturned items. Thank you so much for encouraging your children to read, to use their school library, and to return their books so they are available to others!

New Medication Order Requirements for the 2026-2027 School Year
Important Update: New Medication Order Requirements for the 2026-2027 School Year
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines regarding the administration of medication in public schools has been updated.
To ensure we remain in compliance with these new state regulations, and to provide the highest level of safety for our students, the district has updated its policy regarding the validity period of medical orders.
New Medication Order Requirements:
Effective immediately, all medical orders for both prescription and non-prescription medications for the upcoming school year must be dated within the current academic cycle: July 1st, 2026 through June 30th, 2027.
What this Means for your family:
- Annual Renewals: Any medication orders on file from the previous school year will expire on June 30th. You must provide a new, signed medication order from your child’s licensed prescriber for the upcoming school year.
- July 1st Start Date: We encourage parents to schedule wellness visits or contact their child's physician after July 1st to ensure the paperwork is correctly dated for the full upcoming school year.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and healthy.

Who We Are & Stay Connected
“Who We Are”
Communication with our families is essential to the success and wellness of our students. To assist our families and help them connect with the appropriate staff who is best suited to answer questions, we have updated our “Who We Are” page on our website. The information will guide families to resources on how to reach staff with concerns and how to stay connected to news and events across the district.
