CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
It's been another fantastic week at Canyon View Elementary School. Here are just a few highlights:
We kicked off our CAASPP testing this week and we saw great determination from our students! On Tuesday, our Student Council Officers went with School Counselor Ms. Gamelson on a fieldtrip to Mesa Verde to learn about leadership opportunities in Middle School. On Wednesday, we had a Character Counts assembly including a message about responsibility from our Westview Ambassadors and a performance from the Coyote Choir! This week was extra special for me... between Principal's Day and my birthday I felt so honored by students, families and staff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
As we look to the week ahead, please join me in showing gratitude to the CVES staff for all they do in service of our students. Scroll down for some information from Team CV to help us celebrate this amazing team. This week we will continue our CAASPP testing, so be sure your children get good sleep and a healthy breakfast to set them up for success! On Friday, TK-3rd grades will be going to the theatre to see a performance which features many of our Coyotes on stage!
Let's Make it a GREAT week!

- Fourth graders started a story quilt art project based on American artist Faith Ringgold using fabric, paper pieces and oil pastels.
- Third graders made the most awesome tinfoil sculptures based on sculptor Alberto Giacometti showing movement and motion.

CATCHING UP WITH... Picture Books for Our Families
Specially Curated Books from Ms. Alice Burge, CVES Library & Media Tech (& CVES Classified Employee of the Year!)
April is Autism Acceptance Month, a great opportunity to share stories about the diversity, strengths and unique voices of autistic individuals in our communities and around the world. Every effort – to listen, learn, advocate, support positive change and perform acts of kindness – makes a difference. Autism Acceptance Month recognizes that autism is more than a diagnosis. It is identity, community, and a lived experience that encompasses both challenges and triumphs. Here are some picture books to share with your family.

A Day With No Words, written by Tiffany Hammond, illustrated by Kate Cosgrove
Uniquely Wired: A Story about Autism and Its Gifts, written by Julia Cook, illustrated by Anita DuFalla
This is the story of Zak, a young boy living with autism who wants you to understand how he experiences the sights and sounds of the world around him. Zak knows he's not quite like his siblings and classmates. Bright lights and big crowds are overwhelming to him. Hugs make him uncomfortable, too. His atypical behaviors, from flapping his arms to spinning his body, seem out of place. But for Zak, that's just how he copes. Though his actions may seem peculiar to some, Zak's desires and disappointments are as ordinary as any child's. He loves watches; he hates being excluded. As Zak embraces life the only way he knows how, he teaches those around him important lessons about fairness, patience, curiosity and independence.
All My Stripes: A Story for Children with Autism, written by Shaina Rudolph and Danielle Royer, illustrated by Jennifer Zivion
This engaging story follows Zane, a young zebra on the autism spectrum who learns to understand how he is different from the rest of his classmates. Zane often feels worried that his classmates don't notice his "curiosity," "honesty," or "caring" stripes, just his "autism" stripe. With the help of his Mama, Zane comes to appreciate all of his stripes, including his autism stripe, as the unique strengths that make him who he is. This book, which is also available to borrow from the CVES Library, is a celebration of compassion and embracing your identity.
