Mr. Bartunek at the Country Music Awards
On Wednesday night, our Greenbriar music teacher, Jeremy Bartunek, attended the Country Music Awards in Nashville to receive his award. The Music Teachers of Excellence award supports educators who demonstrate exemplary teaching and student learning, and are committed to making a positive impact on their school and community while raising awareness for the broader cause of music education. We are so proud of Mr. Bartunek!
Lost and Found
Is your child missing any items of clothing, water bottles, or lunch bags? Be sure to check the Lost and Found outside of the gym. All items that are not claimed will be donated on December 5th.
The Importance of School Attendance
Regular school attendance is essential for student growth and learning, and multiple absences can lead to decreased academic and social-emotional progress. The District 28 Elementary Handbook states "for each grading term, student excused/unexcused absences greater than five per child will be reviewed by the administration. Parents of students with a pattern of excessive absences will be contacted by the Principal and/or Social Worker." Our office is currently reviewing student attendance for the first trimester, and we will be notifying parents of students who have missed 5 or more school days.
We understand that children get sick and may not be able to attend school. Please review these District 28 guidelines on when to keep your child home from school: “It is essential that student health concerns and/or contagious diseases (e.g. strep, chicken pox, pink eye, etc.) be reported to the office. Timely reporting helps everyone stay healthy. Please keep your child at home if he/she has a fever (above 100 degrees) and/or the onset of an upper respiratory infection. If your child has had a fever, keep him/her home until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing agent. Similar health and safety measures should be applied if your child has vomited. If your child has an undiagnosed rash, consult with your physician before sending your child to school.”
Please notify the school office by 8:30 AM if your child will miss school, and if you are not sure whether to send your child to school, please call the nurse for consultation or your child’s physician. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please contact us at (847) 498-7950. We would like to work with you in maintaining the best possible attendance record for your child. Helping your child achieve their academic potential is important to us. If we can assist to improve attendance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Event Information
Families often seek effective ways to support their children, but it's essential for them to first support themselves. Connection and expression are key. Movement plays a vital role in fulfilling both parents' and children's emotional needs. This course will examine how movement can bridge the gap in addressing these needs. Discover how to utilize movement for personal well-being and how to leverage your child's movement and body awareness to tackle behavioral challenges, regulate their nervous system, and boost self-awareness and confidence. Register here to receive the zoom link or attend in person at True North, 760 Red Oak Lane in Highland Park.

Rotary Club Coat Drive
The temperatures are dropping, and it’s warm coat weather. For more than a decade, the Rotary of Northbrook has been helping our communities stay warm during the winter with its annual "Coat Off Your Back" collection drive. The coat drive will provide winter coats for infants, children, teens, and adults via multiple outlets serving people in need, from the homeless to veterans, displaced families, and the elderly. You can drop off your donation at the donation bin located at the front of our school until 12/15.
Concert & Coat Drive
School Districts 27, 28, and 30 are partnering with Cradles to Crayons for a charity coat drive, which will run through December 12, 2025. New and gently used coats, boots, and accessories will be accepted (in sizes 0-3 Months to Adult Medium). Donation boxes can be found at Northbrook Junior High and the Northbrook Park District. There will be a FREE community orchestra concert featuring all three school districts on Friday, Dec. 12 at 6pm at Wood Oaks Junior High.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) for 3rd and 5th Grades
As part of our standard assessment procedures, students currently enrolled in 3rd and 5th grades are scheduled to complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on December 2, 4 and 5. This assessment is administered annually to provide valuable insights into students' readiness to learn in different situations and environments, and to assist in the placement for gifted and talented services. The test is comprised of three sections: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal. Please know that formal test preparation is not necessary for this assessment. We recommend that parents support their children by ensuring they receive adequate rest the night before each testing day, and have a nutritious breakfast in the morning. These simple measures help students maintain focus and perform to their full potential.
Additional resources:
We appreciate your partnership in ensuring a smooth testing process for all students. Please visit the district website if you would like to learn more about the CogAT and other district assessments.
Getting Ready for Colder Weather
As the chilly weather arrives, we want to share a friendly reminder about our winter recess procedures:
- We'll be heading outside for recess as long as the "feels like" temperature on weather.com is 10 degrees or warmer.
- Once the snow arrives, students will need to have boots, gloves or mittens, snow pants, and a warm coat to play in the snow. If your child doesn't have these items, they will still get to enjoy the fresh air on our blacktop areas.
- We offer gentle reminders for students to bundle up, and we kindly ask that you discuss your expectations with your child so they know how you want them to stay warm during recess.
Krieger's Crew: A School Facility Dog's Journey
Former Greenbriar Principal Dr. Ginny Hiltz has published a picture book about Krieger, the D28 facility dog! Parents are able to order a book online at kriegerscrew.com/shop , and Dr. Hiltz will send a signed copy home with your student. Please choose the "school visit or family friend" option for delivery and add the child's name in the shipping line. Dr. Hiltz will be reading the book to students at each school during a special library event in the coming months, and you can order it at that time as well. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Canines 4 Comfort, the organization that trained and donated Krieger to District 28. Please email Dr. Hiltz at ghiltz@northbrook28.net with any questions.
