A Note from the Principal:
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2023! I hope you each were able to ring in the new year with positivity and I hope for a productive, successful year ahead. As we return to school this January, we enter the 3rd grading period, the second half of our school year. For the third grading period, we will continue to focus on high quality instruction and supporting every student to be successful. We appreciate your continued support and partnerships. We could not do this work without you!
We were pleased that so many of our students showed growth on the winter MAP assessment. Our teachers use this assessment data to form instructional groups and personalize instruction for every student. Many students met their goals and stretch goals for the winter and we anticipate even more growth for the spring. Lots of learning is taking place in all areas!
January brings the opening of the window for the JCPS Comprehensive School Survey. This survey allows parents and guardians to provide the school and district with important information on how we are doing and the areas we can improve in as well. Please take a moment to complete the survey. The link to the survey is: https://assessment.jefferson.kyschools.us/surveyTool/cssParentLandingPage.aspx If you complete this survey online, you may send a note to your student's teacher informing them that you completed the survey online. Students will receive a special treat in February if their parent completes the survey online or via the paper form we will be sending home soon.
Again, I hope you have a wonderful new year in 2023. We are looking forward to a successful year here at Sanders filled with learning, growing, and continuing to be leaders! Thank you for all your cooperation and dedication in making each school day a success for our students! Stay safe, stay well, and be kind!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dahlgren

Focus on the Family:
Welcome back! We hope everyone had a restful winter break and is having a great start to the new year! New Year's is the perfect time to talk to your children about realistic goal-setting. Learning to work towards a positive goal is an essential life skill that benefits people of all ages, from preschoolers to adults.
Coming up with resolutions is a fun activity for school-age children (from kindergarten to middle school), too.
Here are some ideas to help your child get started:
- I will drink plain milk and water, limiting soda fruit drinks to once per day or less.
- I will wear sunscreen before I go outdoors on a sunny day. I will keep it by the door so I remember to apply it before heading out.
- I will find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing, or riding my bike) that I can do at least three times per week.
- I will always wear a helmet when bicycling.
- I will buckle my seat belt every time I get in a car.
- I will turn off electronic devices, like tablets, television, and video games, at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
- I will read at least one book per month.
Give your child reminders when necessary but most of all, support them and celebrate when they do the right thing.
If you have a need, please don't hesitate to contact our Family Resource Youth Service Center Coordinator, Mrs. Medley. If your student or family has a need, she would be happy to assist through our many programs that are available to assist families. You may reach me at 502-313-4526. My email is amanda.medley@jefferson.kyschools.us.
Counselor's Corner:
In guidance this month we are discussing Growth Mindset. The simplest explanation I've discovered for explaining growth mindset to our students came from an article I read in Positive Psychology, "a growth mindset is believing that your brain can grow and you can learn many new things." Understanding that mistakes are proof that they are trying encourages students to continue even when things seem difficult.
Our Leader In Me habit for the month is Habit 4: Think Win-Win. This habit supports students in knowing when they cooperate, balance courage, and have a common view everyone can win. Utilizing this skill empowers students to resolve conflict in peaceful way.
Please complete the Counseling Request Form, if your student or family is in need of counseling assistance. Counseling and Mental Health Request form.
The counseling department is here to support our students and their families. Please contact the school to speak with Mrs. Tolbert, Mrs. Helm or Mrs. Darnell if you or your family are in need of mental or emotional supports.

Tech Time with Mr. Nethery
This month, Mr. Nethery explains what an Infographic is and how you might use them for fun and for learning. If your family decides to make one, please let him know so he can share it with everyone!
Library News from Mrs. Billiter
January: News from the Library:
2023 is here and the library has many new chapter series and nonfiction choices. Students interested in STEM titles might enjoy the titles about subjects like How Smartphones Are Made and Sold or How Gasoline is Made and Sold. New biographies in the Who Was series have arrived and will be available to students soon. Students will see the arrival of more new books in the next few months.
January’s reading challenge “Read a Book, Learn a Skill” can be completed via the forms in Wednesday folders or by clicking and completing the Google form on the Sanders Elementary Library Home page.
Also, the Kentucky Bluegrass Award Nominee season is here. K-3rd graders are being read each nominee book during Library, forming and supporting opinions verbally and in writing for each book in order to vote for their personal favorite this March. 4th and 5th graders are reading fiction and nonfiction award chapter book nominees on their own. To participate students must read three of the nominee books and complete a voting form. Participants earn a special bookmark, certificate, a Bluegrass candy, and the opportunity to win a $15 gift card to the Spring Scholastic Book Fair.
If at any time you have questions about reading challenges, using the Ebooks resources, or other questions that may arise, please contact me at paula.billiter@jefferson.kyschools.us
