Lambs LedgerApril 2023

Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy

Believe it or not, we are in testing season again! I have enjoyed congratulating our students for meeting their Reading and Math goals! It is a great feeling to earn accomplishments when you put in the effort and work. This is not only an a win for the student, it's one for you too!

Spring break is around the corner! I hope that everyone has an opportunity to regroup, enjoy family time, and take advantage of a relaxed schedule. I look forward to everyone's return as we get one last opportunity to soak in as much learning as possible!

Along with our academics and social emotional learning, attendance is a focus area for us. Since the pandemic, attendance around the nation has declined. At Lambs, we want to support you and help remove any barriers that may exist to interfere with attendance. We know that if your student is present in school, they have a better chance of succeeding!

Did you know that your child can be identified with chronic absenteeism even if they have excused absences? Students who miss over 18 days in the school year whether excused or not are considered chronically absent. We are asking you to partner with us to ensure that your student is in school.

Thank you for being an essential part of your child's learning journey. It takes everyone working together as a team to ensure a top notch education.

Special Area News

Libary: April is National Poetry Month!

In the first and second grade classes at the library, we will be focusing on learning about poetry and making some poems of our own! This month will be centered around exploring different ways of expressing poetry and how diverse authors have used poetry to explain their lives and cultural situations.

Fourth and Fifth graders will also focus on poetry in some classes and will also be exploring topics related to the fourth quarter EL curriculum while checking out selected nonfiction topics to enforce what they are learning in the classroom. Fourth graders will be learning about responding to inequality, specifically ratifying the 19th amendment and fifth graders will be able to explore steamable learning on the topic of Natural Disasters!

The rest of the classes that visit the library will be able to explore poetry related displays and continue working on reaching their Accelerated Reader goals for the last quarter of the school year!

Music: April will find CD focusing on songs and stories about their community.

Kindergarten will be learning songs and stories about the four seasons and our senses.

First grade will be studying the planets and music of Gustav Holst.

Second grade will be learning about the American art form of musicals and the stage.

Third grade will be rehearsing for a performance in May of their music from the Charleston Symphony.

Fourth grade will focus on the music of our Independence, and Fifth grade will be connecting our music past and present from the Industrial Revolution through the World Wars. It's going to be an exciting month of music!!

Art: This month Lambs artists will be busy in Art! Kindergarten artists will create dot art inspired by Yayoi Kusama and 1st graders will create "Cat and Bird" artwork inspired by Paul Klee. Third graders will create number and letter art inspired by South Carolina native, Jasper Johns. Fourth graders will create pop art similar to that of Romero Britto, the world's most licensed artist. Finally, 5th graders will create art inspired by Vincent Vangogh.
