A Rare Opportunity: Violins of Hope Comes to West Bend

The West Bend School District is the only school district in the state to host instruments from the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra's Violins of Hope exhibit—a powerful collection of string instruments once owned by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust.

Each instrument tells a story. These instruments were played by Jewish musicians in concentration camps, in hiding, and in the ghettos. After being recovered and painstakingly restored, they now share the resilience and hope of those who refused to let their voices be silenced.

Join us for an evening of remembrance. Our talented West Bend High School orchestra, band, and choir students will perform pieces of remembrance and powerful student artwork will be on display.

Event details:
Thursday, January 8, 2026
Exhibit: 5-8:30 p.m. Silver Lining Art Center Gallery
Concert: 7:30 p.m.
West Bend High Schools, 1305 E. Decorah Road

Special thanks to the West Bend Public Schools Foundation for making this profound experience possible for our community.

Students Learn of Violins of Hope at Local Museum

The opportunity to learn from stories of the Holocaust also extends to West Bend School District high school students. The Violins of Hope event includes field trips to the Jewish Museum Milwaukee for all U.S. History, wind ensemble, concert choir, chamber strings, concert orchestra, philharmonic, sinfonia, AP Art, and Art Survey classes. To date, 261 students have visited the museum and the Violins of Hope exhibit. More field trips are taking place this week and in January.

The events related to Violins of Hope are supported by the West Bend Public Schools Foundation, an organization that works to invest in student learning and classroom achievement by providing additional funding to the West Bend Schools in the arts, innovation, and fitness.

Four Teachers Earn Highest Professional Honors

Four teachers in the West Bend School District recently earned National Board Certification, one of the highest professional honors in education. Kevin Doornek and Kristen Koenigs of Silverbrook earned the certificate in math and Hailey Dougherty of East and Danielle Schumacher of West earned it in English.

Achieving National Board Certification demonstrates exceptional teaching practice, deep commitment to student learning, and a sustained effort to reflect, refine, and elevate their craft. This accomplishment requires rigorous self-assessment, classroom evidence, and a strong dedication to continuous improvement. Congratulations to all of them for this achievement!
