TOP STORY: Thanksgiving Break
We are more than halfway through the 2nd Quarter and the school will be on Thanksgiving break the rest of the week with no classes for students and offices closed for staff. Please enjoy these days with your family & friends and know how grateful we are to have you as part of our school community. Thank you for whatever role you play — parent, guardian, bus driver, educator, staff member, cafeteria worker, area business owner, community member — in making this campus a safe place to learn and grow for our students. We are grateful for you!
To help celebrate the unity of our community, our talented Viking Choir students — under the direction of Mr. Sifner — will perform during the 50th Annual Community Thanksgiving Gathering tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 22) at 8 p.m. at St. Veronica's (formerly IJP) in Flossmoor. All are welcome!
From our H-F family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
National Native American Heritage Month
November is National Native American Heritage Month (also referred to as American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month), which celebrates the history, heritage and culture of Indigenous Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. The H-F Library has created a resource guide to help staff and students celebrate this month; check it out during the break by clicking here... Also, this morning H-F's Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Coordinator Mrs. Cook shared the following message with students & staff:
"In the 2021 proclamation on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, it states: 'For generations, federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures. [This month,] we recognize indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength, as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society.' While the upcoming holiday is a time of thanksgiving and joy for many, we also recognize that the Thanksgiving holiday holds memories of pain and sadness and reminders of the fight for rights indigenous people still face. As an H-F family, we uplift the voices of indigenous people locally and globally and carry their truths as we enter this holiday break."
Voyage to Excellence Open House: Thursday, Dec. 1
Soon after Thanksgiving break it will be time for our current Vikings to show off H-F to our future Vikings at the annual Voyage to Excellence Open House!
Area 8th Graders will be invited to the North Building Fieldhouse on Thursday, Dec. 1. Booths from H-F's academic departments, clubs, sports and activities will be there to provide information on their organizations and how incoming freshmen can get involved. Students from James Hart and Brookwood schools will attend from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Students from Parker Junior High and Infant Jesus of Prague schools will attend from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Reach out to the Activities Office for more information: gsmith@hf233.org, 708-335-5525.
SAT Test Prep begins in January
Registration is now open for ExcelEdge SAT Test Prep for juniors! The SAT is still important for college planning, as it is used not only for college admissions, but also for placement and scholarships. H-F juniors will take the SAT on April 12 during the school day. To help them prepare for the test, H-F has invited ExcelEdge to offer its program, SAT 1600, here at school. The program will be offered in-person by experienced instructors who are certified content specialists to teach point-producing offensive and defensive strategies on how to navigate difficult items on the SAT. Register now for one of two available sessions:
- Tuesdays from Jan. 31-March 14 at 6:30-8:30 p.m.
- Saturdays from Feb. 4-March 18: Saturdays at 10 a.m.-Noon
Fee is $180/student. Juniors only. Registration is open now and will close on Jan. 13 or once the sessions are filled. To register on 8to18, click here.
Questions? For more information, contact the Assessment Office at 708-335-5584 or cbucci@hf233.org.
Lunch Account Reminder from the Business Office
Please note: If your student intends to use their student lunch account to purchase their meals at H-F, then they must use their physical or virtual student ID. Verbally sharing their ID number with the cashier is not an acceptable method to make purchases using their lunch account. QR codes are posted throughout both cafeterias to assist students with pulling up their virtual ID on their phones. Paying with cash is also still acceptable.
Additionally, to avoid food service interruptions, Quest Food Services will send lunch account alerts for accounts that are approaching negative balances, as well as negative balances beyond a threshold.
For any questions regarding lunch accounts, please contact Quest at 708-335-5569.
Last week Mrs. Clark's Advanced Culinary students were challenged to create appetizers out of homemade waffles and a from-scratch sauce. Staff members served as judges at one of the first of many culinary competitions of the school year!
The Culinary 1 class has been learning some dishes for Thanksgiving. Below is the class recipe for Macaroni & Cheese, in case you'd like to try it at home:
