Culinary students win big at Bite of Apprentice Culinary students win big at Bite of Apprentice

Culinary students from Bonney Lake High School and Sumner High School attended the Washington State Chefs Association’s annual “Bite of Apprentice” event at Farm 12 in Puyallup on Tuesday. They competed alongside other high schools and colleges by presenting their talents in cooking to professional judges.

Panther chefs took home the first place trophy for Bonney Lake High School in the high school category and second place in People’s Choice with a seafood winning dish featuring Hawaiian Kanpachi. Congratulations, Panthers!

The theme of the dish from the Spartan chefs was “Food, Land, and People,” inspired by flavors and agricultural history of the Valley that included rhubarb sauce, fresh raspberries and sautéed apples with homemade salted caramel.

It was a great opportunity for students to showcase what they’re learning beyond the classroom. Way to go!

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District, in partnership with local law enforcement, reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert and use extra caution around schools and crosswalks.

As students travel to and from school, please keep these important safety reminders in mind:

  • Stop for pedestrians

  • Do not drive around a crossing guard

  • Slow down and stay alert

  • Be patient!

Know the law: Under Washington state law (RCW 46.61.235), drivers must stop for pedestrians and remain stopped when required at marked and unmarked crosswalks. Violations in school, playground and crosswalk speed zones can result in doubled penalties.

Thank you for keeping our students safe!
