PICTURE RETAKES

Picture retakes will be Friday, October 13th.

According to the package label, retakes will require a $5 fee if the reason for retakes is purely cosmetic. Keep that in mind with sending the package of pictures back as well. Details on picture retakes are included in the packet.

Send me an e-mail if you're planning to have your child do retakes, that way I know to look for their picture packet that day and get them down there for retakes!

READING

Our texts this week revolve around all things apples and autumn. We will be looking at both fiction and nonfiction books that revolve around these topics.

PHONICS

We are finishing our unit where we have practiced and learned about the short a sound. We will move into CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words with the short i this week and next. We are continuing to practice discussing and CLOVER marking open and closed syllables.

MATH

We are continuing to work on word problems. Last week we focused on joint word problems where you have both parts but the answer is unknown. This week we are working on joint word problems with the change unknown. For example... There are 3 red birds sitting in the tree. Some blue birds joined them. Now I have 5 birds. How many blue birds joined? We're talking a lot about the counting on strategy and how mathematicians use math drawings to help show their work.

WRITING

What is a sentence? This week in 1R we're looking at what a sentence is. We discussed how it's a group of words that make a complete thought and how sentences have a naming part and a telling part. We're also looking at the capital letter and punctuation.

PLTW (Science)

Our first module will be Light and Sound. In this module, students investigate light and sound, including vibration from sound waves and the effect of different materials on the path of a beam of light. The students use a design process to sketch, build, test, and reflect on a device that uses light or sound to communicate across a distance.
