Happy Retirement Mr. Keyser!! Happy Retirement Mr. Keyser!!

It is hard to believe that the end of our school year is fast approaching. Our students, teachers parents and staff have all done a fantastic job with embracing the new normal. When the 2019-2020 school year is complete, HMS will not only be saying goodbye to a year we will never forget ... we will also be saying farewell to our principal Mr. Keyser. Send a SHOUT OUT over the next two weeks to keyser@hemlockps.com to say goodbye. We wish him well on this new adventure and he will be missed by his HMS Huskie Pack!! Once a Huskie, Always a Huskie!!!

Evacuations and flooding

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families that are now dealing with the flooding in our local areas. The Hemlock High School has become shelter to many in need of assistance during this time. Thank you to all of the volunteers and everyone who has made donations. We are thankful and blessed to be part of such a great community. HUSKIE PROUD!!!

STAFF RECOGNITION HIGHLIGHT STAFF RECOGNITION HIGHLIGHT

Hemlock Public School District is pleased to announce that Joshua Chase has been selected as the new Hemlock Middle School Principal pending Board of Education approval for the 2020-21 school year.

The district received a lot of interest from qualified candidates and went through a rigorous interview process which included a digital screener, face to face interview, and finalists were greeted by a panel of nine, comprised of building staff, administrators, parents, and board members.

Board President Dr. Ellison said, "I couldn't be more excited for Mr. Chase and the district. Josh has earned the respect of his peers and students as a teacher, and will, undoubtedly, be a top-notch leader as a principal."

Mr. Chase will be a familiar face to many of our parents, students, and community members. He is a long-time Hemlock Public School District staff member as the 5th-12th grade band director and multi-media teacher.

Superintendent Killingbeck, himself a band parent, shares the loss, yet excitement with students, parents, and the community stating, “Director Chase is an excellent educator and one of the finest band directors in the State of Michigan. Under his leadership, the program has blossomed and grown to include nearly 1 out of 4 Hemlock High School students. We are, however, confident that both the band and the Middle School will move forward in a positive direction.”

Chase has a professional portfolio of experience, which includes 17 years as a classroom teacher, and has served in the leadership capacity within the school district, as a coach, Director of Summer Recreation, a union negotiator, as well as the district’s band director.

New Middle School Principal Joshua Chase said, “I will forever cherish my time as the leader of the Hemlock Band. However, I am very excited about this new challenge in my career. I am ready to get to work in my new position where I hope to have an even bigger reach of the student body”.

Mr. Chase received his Bachelor of Arts in Education, in Music Education from Anderson University and went on to receive his Master of Education, in 2020 in Educational Technology Leadership from Lamar University. He is excited to work with the amazing group of middle school teachers and support staff at Hemlock and looks forward to leading the Huskie pack.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck said, “We are fortunate to have had such a wonderful pool of candidates. Mr. Chase was at the top of the list. His experience, credentials, and leadership are top-notch.”

After getting settled into his position, Principal Chase plans on focusing on strengthening relationships, continuous improvements that are in place such as curriculum development, behavior support (PBIS/PAWS), developing student leadership, and focusing on student needs.

CONGRATULATIONS MR. CHASE! CONGRATULATIONS MR. CHASE!

Yummy Recipes from Staff

Mrs. Zastrow's Crater Cake

1 cup Butter (room temperature)

2 cups White Sugar

2 Eggs, beaten

2 teaspoons Vanilla

3-4 very ripe Bananas, mashed

3 cups Flour

2 teaspoons Baking Soda

2 teaspoons Baking Powder

1 cup Sour Cream

1 1/2 teaspoons Cinnamon

1/2 cup Brown Sugar

1 1/2 cups Chocolate Chips

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease the inside of a 9-x-13 inch baking pan with butter. In two separate bowls, mash the bananas and beat the eggs. Set aside.

Cream together room temperature butter and sugar with a hand mixer or with the paddle attachment of a stand mixer. Add beaten eggs and beat until smooth. Add vanilla and mashed bananas. It might look a little funky at this point but that's okay. Mix again until smooth.

Sift flour, powder, and baking soda into a separate big bowl. Add this dry mixture to the banana mixture, alternating with sour cream. Add a scoop of dry mixture, a scoop of sour cream, and keep mixing and repeating until all ingredients are used up. It's best to have your mixer on the lowest setting for this so it doesn't over mix.

Pour half the cake batter into the greased 9-x-13 inch baking pan.

In a small bowl, combine cinnamon and brown sugar with a fork, breaking up any clumps and making sure it's well incorporated. Sprinkle half the mixture over batter in the pan. Top with half the chocolate chips. Repeat, so you have two layers of cake and two layers of cinnamon-brown sugar-chocolate (this will be your top layer, like a coffee cake).

Bake at 350 for 50-55 minutes, until the center of the cake is set. Don't over bake it, the middle will cook a little even after it's taken out of the oven. Let it sit for at least an hour before eating.

TIPS: This recipe is pretty forgiving. Don't over bake; check multiple spots along the outer edge with a toothpick. It should come out clean. If the middle is not completely done its fine, it will continue to cook as it rests.

Athletic Physicals for 2020-2021 Year

Per the MHSAA...

Preparticipation Physical Examinations (Regulation I, Section 3 and Interpretation 20): For the 2020-21 school year the MHSAA pre-participation sports physical requirement will be waived for students in any grade who received a valid physical for sports during the 2019-20 school year (one completed on or after April 15, 2019). These students and their parents/guardians will be required to complete the two-page MHSAA ANNUAL SPORTS HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE. These must be signed by student and parent/guardian and kept on file in the school.

Students who did not receive a sports physical in the 2019-20 school year or later must have a valid physical examination form on file. If a student is discovered to have participated without a valid physical or Health Questionnaire on file, the student shall not be eligible to participate until a valid physical or Health Questionnaire is on file.

The Hemlock Athletic Department will be sending out more information regarding the MHSAA questionnaire.

Stay Home, stay MIndful

To most of us Michiganders the Stay Safe, Stay Home order isn't getting any easier and can be challenging for many at times. Now more then ever, it's important to take care of ourselves and one another while we do our part to stay home and stay safe. Governor Whitmer has teamed up with Headspace to help us do just that.

Check out this website at https://www.headspace.com/MI for a special collection of meditation, sleep and movement exercises that are designed to help us keep a strong and healthy mind in the midst of this global health crisis. We will get through this together.
