The Cannon Connection
2023-2024 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
We are Cannon Proud! ☮️❤️⚙️🐻
January 7-13, 2024
Good morning, Cannon families,
This past Friday, we celebrated our first semester student achievement with a Middle of Year GLOW Pep Rally 🌟 Our Cubs have had amazing growth and have so much to GLOW about! Our staff and students are pumped and ready to finish the year STRONG!
Please make sure your scholar arrives on time each morning prepared with their charged iPad or Chromebook. EVERY DAY COUNTS! As a reminder staff is available at 7:20 and doors open at 7:25. Scholars are late after 7:40 and breakfast is no longer available. Also, 👟please remember to send students in sneakers - especially on PE days!
We will be taking STAAR interims this month (Dates below). It's important that our scholars do their best so that we can design instruction to support their needs leading up to STAAR testing days. We administer our interims identically to official STAAR testing days. Once our scholars start, we can not interrupt them. That said, please do not schedule appointments on testing days; We will not be able to interrupt testing and release your child. Our campus will be closed for test security protocols on testing days; this does include no lunch visitors or deliveries. Thank you for your support and help to create a positive and secure testing environment.
As a reminder, Monday, January 15 is a staff and student holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett
#BeCannonProud
Thank you!
Thank you to our generous families for donating food and gifts to support our community during the holidays. You were able to make the holidays very special for many by donating to our Food Drive, Angel Tree, and GRACE’s Christmas Cottage. We couldn’t do it without your help!
❤️ Join the Kids Heart Challenge at Cannon Elementary!
Our goal is to rally all families join our team, learn Hands-Only CPR, build awareness, and raise $9,000 for the American Heart Association.
Ready to kick off?
Sign up, make a lifesaving donation, and start Finn’s Mission by downloading the free app for iPhone or Android, or registering online: http://www2.heart.org/goto/CannonElementary!
Want to see why students are buzzing Kids Heart Challenge? Watch the Official Kick Off Video!
If 50% of our students register online our school will receive a $500 bonus for fitness and well-being equipment.
The heart of the matter:
One family saved a life with Hands-Only CPR that they learned from Finn’s Mission. Hands-Only CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a victim's chance of survival.

Counselor’s Corner
Counselor’s Corner - Perseverance is the character trait we focus on in January. Students will learn that perseverance is pushing yourself to work through challenges and obstacles. During guidance lessons, we will practice persevering through challenges and discuss coping strategies to help us. How will you practice perseverance at home? Check out the activities in the PurposeFULL People Newsletter. If you have any questions or need to contact Mrs. Coburn our Cannon School Counselor, you can reach her at mandy.coburn@gcisd.net or (817) 251-5684.
