Car Rider Safety Reminder

For everyone's safety, car riders must remain in their car until the doors of the school open at 8:40. Students should not be walking on school property or gathering at the doors priors to opening.

SBDM Minority Parent Representative

We have an open seat on our SBDM Council for a minority parent.

What is SBDM? A process that involves councils that set school policies that are consistent with district board policies. The goal is to improve student achievement and help schools meet their goals. SBDM councils may cover topics such as curriculum, instruction, assessment, budgeting, staffing, and school organization.

The Council meets once a month after school.

Per state policy, a parent on SBDM is defined as:

A “parent” means a parent, stepparent, or foster parent. Guardians also qualify as parents if the student lives with them and they have a court order giving them legal custody. A parent council member will be the parent of a student pre-registered to attend the school during the parent's term of council service.

If you are interested in serving in this position, please reach out to Mr. Mullins!

BCPS Goes Gold BCPS Goes Gold

The week of September 9-13, 2024 will be BCPS Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness across our schools! Each school will be doing a donation drive during the week along with designated dress up days for students and staff. Don't forget to scan the QR code below to order your t-shirt to wear at the BCPS high school football games on September 6th, to kick off our BCPS Goes Gold week, and September 13th to close out the week.

Donations for the hospital and the families receiving treatment are being collected at every school. Our school is collecting non perishable, individually wrapped snacks. Students may bring donated items in to the office any time. We will collect them and they will be picked up from the school at the end of BCPS Goes Gold week.

Examples of non perishable, individually wrapped snacks:

  • granola bars
  • trail mix packets
  • jerky
  • snack cakes (like Little Debbie's)
  • popcorn
  • individual bags of pretzels and chips
  • nut

Due to different factors, Grandparents Week activities at LJES are changing. We still want to honor our grandparents and provide an opportunity for them to visit our school, but our schedule and space just are not allowing us to do our normal lunch.

Have no fear! We have a plan!

This year, we will change from inviting grandparents in to eat lunch and are instead doing Donuts with Grownups.

We will supply donuts to the adults who attend. Students will also get a donut. To get around the state rules for breakfast, in order for a student to get a donut, he/she must first get breakfast from the line. Grownups will be allowed to join us for breakfast and the book fair from 8:40-9:30 in the cafeteria. Grownups who wish to purchase a school breakfast may do so for $2.90. At 9:30, our book fair is busy with class visits, so we will need all grownups to finish their shopping and exit our building by 9:30.

Don't worry - I don't believe it is fair for students to miss out on donuts just because an adult in their life couldn't join us. We will provide donuts for every student regardless of their adult attending. Students just have to go through the breakfast line first.

The book fair will not be open to visitors during the school day due to our schedule this year.

Below is our schedule of events for the week:

  • Wednesday, September 11th: Donuts with Grownups K & 5th

  • Thursday, September 12th: Donuts with Grownups 1st & 4th
  • Thursday, September 12 5:30-7:00 Title 1 Family Night; the book fair will also be open during family night so you may shop with your child

  • Friday, September 13th: Donuts with Grownups 2nd & 3rd

We are a Title I School We are a Title I School

What does it mean when you hear a school say that they are Title 1?

A Title 1 school is a school that receives federal funding to help improve academic achievement for students from low-income families.

How does LJES use their Title 1 money?

The funding has limitations on what you can do with it as there is strict accountability for those dollars. Typically, LJES uses Title 1 money to purchase classified staff who can assist students who are struggling in class. This year is no different; we hired 2 assistants to work with students in class and through pull out, catching up on learning gaps that are present. We also pay for part of our librarian's salary since LJES only qualifies for a part-time librarian. We want students to have access to books and library services all the time and believe a full time librarian will make that possible. Our librarian is also in charge of chromebook inventory and troubleshooting technology issues in the building.
