MiSTEM Network State News
Each year, the MiSTEM Advisory Council sets forth its strategic vision and outlines goals and objectives to advance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Michigan.
In fiscal year (FY) 2025, the council is focused on investing in communities with a specific framework that will transform STEM learning and build out STEM learning opportunities in every corner of the state.
The framework is grounded in place-, project- and problem-based (3P) STEM learning models. These models are dynamic approaches that engage students in real-world challenges and contexts, both inside and outside the classroom. By encouraging students to explore their environments, collaborate on meaningful projects and solve complex problems, 3P models foster deep understanding and make learning more relevant and impactful.
By adopting a holistic approach that begins with local and regional investment as part of an integrated statewide strategy, the council’s recommendations establish a workable strategic plan to accelerate STEM learning and meet current needs while anticipating educational and workforce demands. The hallmark of the plan is to create 3P STEM demonstration communities. The council will identify seven communities across the state that are accessible to all and can serve as catalysts for transformation. Selected demonstration communities will showcase STEM in real-world applications and provide opportunities to learn from those who have successfully implemented 3P strategies.

Computer Science
After Senate approval, House Bill 5649 is awaiting the Governor’s signature, following passage by both the Senate and House. Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, public high schools will be required to offer at least one computer science course focused on the study of computers, algorithmic processes, and teaching students how to create new technologies. While schools must make a good-faith effort to offer the course in person, a virtual option will be allowed.

Design and Build ROV in-person Workshop at Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary!
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is happy to announce a new collaboration with Project ROVe (Remotely Operated Vehicles for Educators), a course that educates and empowers teachers to integrate marine technology into their curriculum through underwater robotics. All educators welcome. Please share widely!
We have an exciting professional development opportunity to kick off the new year! We are offering 2 marine technology-focused professional development courses in 2025 for those educators interested in incorporating ROVs and marine technology into their curriculum and/or creating a team for an ROV Competition. Both courses are free of charge thanks to our partners.
Introduction to ROVs online course. In this course, you will collaborate with other educators and representatives from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and/or NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) to explore ROV technology, build simple underwater ROVs, and create an implementation plan for your classroom. The course will run January-May 2025, with an evening (6pm ET) virtual meeting once a month. Learn more here.
The Design and Build ROV in-person Workshop will be held July 31-Aug 3, 2025 in Alpena, Michigan. During this workshop, you will learn how to build and take home a MATE Pufferfish ROV while working on a curriculum implementation plan. Note: Currently we are collecting interest for this workshop so we can gauge numbers. Formal registration for this course will begin in February or March 2025. You can find more detailed information about this workshop here.
Register here for the Introduction to ROVs online course and indicate your interest in the Design and Build Summer Workshop. If you have any questions regarding either of the courses, please contact Andrea Schmuttermair at aschmuttermair@marinesanctuary.org.
Andrea is the ROV Education Coordinator at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the founder of Project ROVe. You can find more information about the program, blogs, and videos on the Project ROVe website.
