3. Lesson Plans to teach school-wide expectations

4. Acknowledgement system

YOU GET MORE OF WHAT YOU PAY ATTENTION TO

This is the heart of POSITIVE Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS). The more you pay attention to the expected behaviors students demonstrate, the more students will engage in those positive behaviors.

Next time you see a student engaging in an unexpected behavior, try attending to the students who are doing what they should. Giving those students praise may get the other student back on track. Once that student starts to demonstrate expected behaviors, give him or her attention too!

SETTING CLEAR EXPECTATIONS SETS YOU AND STUDENTS UP FOR SUCCESS

Although students may have been flawlessly moving through routines prior to break, it is important that teachers reteach expectations and routines following time off school.

Reviewing and practicing classroom and building routines communicates clear expectations to students regarding their behavior. When pre-teaching is used prior to the student having to follow that expectation, they are more likely to be successful. Providing positive praise for engaging in the schoolwide expectations can increase positive behavior and the student-teacher relationship.

When teachers assume students remember the expectations and then focus on correcting errors, students are less likely to be successful; the student-teacher relationship may also be negatively affected.
