METCO Newsletter
Bedford METCO | January 2025| Week 1/20
Happy Tuesday, METCO Families!
We want to remind everyone that this week will be a short one, and temperatures are expected to drop significantly with negative degrees and a harsh wind chill due to an incoming Arctic blast. Please be sure your child is dressed warmly for school each day to ensure they stay comfortable and safe.
This week, we will be sending out our Possip Question, which will focus on School Start Time. We highly encourage all families to share their thoughts and feedback as we continue working to improve our school community.
For our middle school families, we kindly ask for your cooperation in informing the METCO Coordinator, Mr. Brome, if your child will be staying after school for METCO Math, Tenacity, or any other after school activity, especially on Tuesday and Thursday. Additionally, please remind your child to be on time for the late bus departures.
The late bus schedule is attached for your reference.
We hope everyone stays warm and safe this week, and we look forward to hearing your responses to the Possip Question!
Warm regards,
--
~Akil

New Exhibit: Re/Presenting: Art Beyond the Color Line
New Exhibit: Re/Presenting: Art Beyond the Color Line
Amherst College's Mead Museum
Starts November 12, 2024
What does it mean to truly observe a person, and to depict them—or ourselves—with love and care?
Systems like colonialism and white supremacy categorize, label, and create hierarchies among different bodies that can shape or distort our perceptions of ourselves and each other. The art we consume and make can also create or reinforce ideas about who is visible, valuable, or beautiful. So how might we learn to see and represent all people in ways that foster more peace, justice, and respect?
Re/Presenting takes inspiration from EmbraceRace’s innovative curriculum Drawing Differences. The curriculum provides a framework for addressing the underrepresentation of diverse characters in children's drawings through hands-on activities that encourage a wide range of depictions of skin colors, hair textures, and facial features.

PDC Message
Dear families,
The Parents Diversity Council was formed in 2018 to create opportunities within the Bedford Public Schools to foster a culture of inclusion and belonging for all Bedford, Boston, and Hanscom students and their families. The PDC is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, and we rely on your generous financial support.
Through fun and meaningful cultural events, community conversations, and collaborations, the PDC provides welcoming spaces to nurture authentic and lasting relationships among students and families across Bedford’s communities and cultures.
As we call on you in support of our Annual Appeal, here are some of the ways the PDC has made a positive impact in Bedford this past year:
- Co-sponsored the Black History celebration with the Bedford METCO program.
- Organized Bedford’s 3rd Annual PRIDE Celebration in collaboration with Bedford Youth and Family Services.
- Sponsored the Indigenous Peoples Day Turtle Island Mural Project, led by Mashpee Wampanoag artist Aimee Ledwell. The Mural is now on view outside the Children’s Room at the Bedford Library.
- Organized a community conversation with noted author Mitali Perkins, who discussed cultural acceptance and belonging, themes covered in her books.
- Sponsored Eid-Al-Fitr celebration, marking the end of Ramadan. The event featured traditional crafts, Henna, and a presentation about the holiday from members of the community.
- Partnered with Bedford Public Library on family-oriented Cultural Mosaic events for Diwali and Lunar New Year.
- Hosted after-school Stay-and-Plays, bringing together students at Davis and Lane.
Please help us raise $5,000 in crucial funds for this continued work by donating to the PDC’s Annual Appeal! Every dollar of your fully tax-deductible donation will directly benefit students and families in the Bedford Public schools.
Thank you! We are so grateful for your partnership as we help build a warm and equitable community where everyone feels supported.

The Fidelity Scholars Program
The 2025 - 2026 Fidelity Scholars Program is open and will close on January 30, 2025!
NEW THIS YEAR - The Fidelity Scholarship Program is now open to high school seniors in Rhode Island looking to go to school in-state.
As a need-based scholarship, the amount of financial support provided will depend on the cost of attendance determined by the college or university in which students are attending in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Fidelity Scholars Program uses a last-dollar approach meaning scholarship funds will only be applied after the Student Aid Index (SAI) and all other financial aid sources have been granted.
The Fidelity Scholars Program is a life-changing opportunity for high school seniors from Massachusetts to eliminate the need for loans and get through college debt free!
