Transportation, Maintenance, & Warehouse Appreciation! Transportation, Maintenance, & Warehouse Appreciation!

The Livonia PTSA Council will again collect donations from LPS families for our Transportation, Maintenance, & Warehouse staff members in the district. There are 130 hard-working folks and we will be providing goody bags and breakfast for them on Thursday, March 21st. Families can purchase items from our Amazon wish list or make a monetary donation through our Memberhub site. Please share the attached flyer with your school community. Please ask your principals to share the flyer in their weekly updates as well.

We will be putting the bags together after our Council Meeting on Wednesday, March 20th at the board office. All are welcome to join our meeting as always, and we hope that some board members will help with our process of goody bag assembly! Many hands make light work!

Michigan PTA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Surveys

The Michigan PTA DEI Committee is proud to present two surveys developed to help us better meet our Committee's mission to inspire and educate members across our state about DEI values and strategies in support of a more inclusive and equitable world, starting with our own organizations. We want to hear from all levels of PTA stakeholders - leaders, members, and students - about their understanding of DEI, what strategies or practices are currently in place, and what additional resources or support are needed. You can access the surveys here:

Student survey: https://forms.gle/bsVciSur7f5ABvK89

PTA members and leaders: https://forms.gle/auVQBNcBa4zGAUkj9

The surveys are anonymous (unless you choose to share contact information) and will remain open through March 1, 2024. The Committee will then summarize and share the survey results. Thank you in advance for your time and your commitment to PTA!

Michigan PTA's 2024 Legislative Platform:

Michigan PTA is calling upon our Members of our State Legislature, school districts, and schools to:

1. Support Student Health & Wellness Legislation and Funding. Support programs to help students experiencing health issues and encourage school wellness. Fund more mental health professionals in schools and expand training and safety resources for educators.

2. Support School Safety Legislation and Funding. Michigan PTA is asking our Michigan legislators to continue their commitment to Safe and Supportive Schools through legislation and funding, addressing prevention and treatment for all students.

3. Support Increased and Sustained School Funding. Make needed investments in education, and find permanent replacements for temporary funding, to provide a safe environment and maximize education delivery for our children, teachers, and administrators across the state.

Michigan PTA’s Advocacy Day is focused on grassroots advocacy – the cornerstone of PTA! Since our founding, PTA has recognized the importance of advocacy in improving the lives of our nation’s children. Attend Advocacy Day to become more effective advocates, and to share your knowledge with others. This is a great opportunity for adults and students to learn new skills.

Registration is only $25 per adult and $10 per student, and includes lunch. Please join us!

Membership

It's that time of year when we start looking forward to those end of the year celebrations, festivities, events, etc. What better way to gain more members? Maybe have an incentive for those who are members at those events. Are you looking for future board members for your slate? Make sure they are members of your PTA/PTSA. There's still time!

Please remember to send Michigan PTA their dues for all new members by the 28th of every month to remain in compliance.

PTA/PTSA Excellence Program (PEP)

ONE MORE MONTH!!! Can you believe there's only one more month of PEP earnings left for this school year?! You heard that correctly! One month left! Keep inviting your liaison to your meetings and submitting newsletter articles, don't forget to CC PEP. Is your PTA/PTSA unit participating in YMAD? If so, you will receive PEP credit for doing so! You'll also receive PEP credit for attending Founders' Day! All submissions need to be submitted to PEP before the end of the day on April 30th to count toward this year's PEP totals. The top earning PTA/PTSA units will receive a gift from Livonia PTSA Council. So don't forget to get those PEP submissions in. Everything that's submitted starting May 1, 2023 will be counted toward next year's PEP totals.

Want to know where your PTA/PTSA unit stands with their PEP earnings? Go to Livonia PTSA Council's website to see the breakdown at https://livoniaptsacouncil.org/work/pep/ . If you have any questions or notice any errors, please let PEP know prior to April 30th.

Second Grade Field Trip Experience:

LPTSA Council enjoyed having James McConnell from the Livonia Historical Society speak at one of our meetings regarding the "Second Grade Field Trip Experience" at Greenmead Historical Park. Students get to experience what a day in the Newburg School was like when it was a functioning school.

There are currently 16 second-grade LPS classrooms signed up for this field trip this spring. Still, it has become the Livonia Historical Society's goal to have every second class in LPS experience this educational and fun field trip.

Students will learn what a typical school day was for children who attended the Newburg School from how they dressed, what they brought their lunches in, what they learned, and how their school day compares to today's school day. And of course, there is the much-anticipated candy bag at the end of the trip! These are just a few of the trip highlights. Dr. McConnell has asked that we share this information with all of our units so that they may also share it with the admin and staff at their schools.

Dr. McConnell is also requesting donations from PTAs to help fund the trip. If your PTA is able to donate toward your second grade classrooms' trips, please contact him at jam1776@sbcglobal.net or 734-525-2962. You may need to amend your budget and add a line item.

If your school has an interest in having their second graders attend the Second Grade Field Trip Experience at Greenmead, they can reach out to the Livonia Historical Society at livoniahistoricalsocietymi.org or they can contact Susan Bailey, Greenmead Tour Coordinator at 248-477-7375.

Hoover Elementary

Greetings from Hoover, y'all!

February overall has been a pretty quiet month. We celebrated Heart Month by wearing red as a Spirit Day on February 9th. On the 21st, Hoover showed up to celebrate Founders' Day, which was such a great honor to attend. It was truly wonderful to be surrounded by all these wonderful men and women who care for and support our kids everyday! Hoover was well represented by the PTA, our principal, and many staff members, as well as our guests of honor! We also won an award for communications for our newsletter article submissions!

March is reading month, and we have big things planned!! Our theme is "Blast Off into Reading!" We also have a skate night and a Panera dine to donate! It's always a fun month. Hard to believe it is nearly Spring Break!

Happy March!

Kennedy Elementary

February was a busy month at Kennedy!

The students enjoyed a fun STEAM night sponsored by our PTA. The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum came to Kennedy and students and their families enjoyed learning together.

Our PTA assisted with our 2nd grade field trip to High Velocity and 3rd grade field trip to Lansing. Each trip was a wonderful time and parent volunteers were even able to join in on the fun.

In February, each locker was adorned with special heart messages. Little and big volunteers alike wrote out the messages and placed them on each student’s locker to discover the morning of Valentine’s Day.

Our PTA sent a Valentine to each student with glow glasses, a glow bracelet or a glow ring attached as a reminder to attend the free family dance, Hearts A Glow! Our PTA sponsored Hearts Aglow Dance is always a fun-filled night! This year our dance included face painting, a photo booth and glow dancing with music provided by Marihugh Entertainment. There was also a quiet space in the library for those who needed a break from the lights and music.

During February, our Kennedy PTA also hung notes of gratitude on the wall in the staff lounge throughout the month for teachers/staff to enjoy. Thanks to participation from our wonderful families, our staff lounge was full of love.

Later in the month our students looked forward to a Family Night at a USA Hockey Game.

All in all, February was a busy and memory making month over at Kennedy Elementary.

Randolph Elementary

Spring is near and our Randolph Roadrunners are excited for the warmer weather. Here's a recap of our February. The Randolph PTA hosted our Valentine’s bingo night. It was a fun filled night with lots of prizes for our “BINGO” winners. We have reached our goal for YMAD participants and have hosted a couple school wide events in support of the program. One event last year was helping sort the canned foods from our food drive. This month the kiddos helped make Valetines cards for a local senior community.

March is reading month and we have already sent out the sign up for our “READ” shirts for our students. On March 15th, we will have a guest reader, author Leslie Helakoski, who will be reading “Big Chickens” to our students. The Randolph PTA will also be providing each family with a copy of “Big Chickens” to take home. Looking forward to all the fun things to come as we wind down the remaining days of school!

Riley Upper Elementary

Riley hosted our February PTA meeting at Riverside Arena during a roller skating fundraiser night. We had a great turnout!

Riley PTA hosted a yearbook cover drawing contest. Our principals voted on their favorite and the winner was Logan M., she will win a free yearbook. Here is the winning design.

Webster Elementary

Over the past month we've been planning our Cookies and Canvas event. On February 12th, we invited students and their parent/guardian to come create their very own canvas art piece and enjoy a sweet treat. Most of the parents/guardians also painted, totaling 50 painters. Our very own art teacher, Mr. Fugedi, led the group in a step-by-step process of creating a memorable art piece and a night to remember. The families really seemed to enjoy this event. We highly recommend it!

On February 19th, we had a BJ's Brewhouse dine out and enjoyed their yummy food.

We look forward to March is Reading Month and all the fun that brings!
