A Message from the Williston Schools Leadership Team A Message from the Williston Schools Leadership Team

by Angela Filion, Allen Brook School Building Principal

Dear Allen Brook Families,

We are excited to share some wonderful news with our school community that Allen Brook School is opening a Family Resource Room!

This space was created with families at the heart of it and is designed to be welcoming, supportive, and practical. Our goal is simple: to make sure families have access to the resources they need and a comfortable place to connect with the school.

What you’ll find in our Family Resource Room:

  • 🥫 Food support and healthy snacks

  • 👕 Extra clothing and seasonal gear

  • 💻 A computer and printer for school forms, job searches, internet access etc.

  • 🪑 A private, comfortable meeting space for families to meet with school staff

  • 🧸 Books, toys, and puzzles so children have something engaging to do if they accompany you to meetings

  • 📚 A lending library with parenting resources, children’s books, and learning materials(still a work in progress)

This room is for all families, whether you need a quick resource, a quiet space, or a place to connect. Please know that you are always welcome, and that asking for support is a strength.

A Huge Thank You

This space would not be possible without the generosity and care of our community. We extend heartfelt thanks to: WFAP for promoting this work in their communications, Caroline Hesko, Natalie Lodge, Suzanne Curtis, Cara Clopton, The First Grade team, Dee Goulette, Allie Friedman, Michelle Finnefrock, and Fred Erdman & Cindy Cole. We are still waiting to hear from Berlin City as we did submit a grant to them to help support this space.

Thank you for your generous donations of puzzles, a floor rug, books, toys, a refrigerator, and a paper shredder. Your contributions helped turn an idea into a warm, functional space that will directly support our families.

We are still searching for an armoire/shelf to store extra clothing and a stand for the microwave should anyone have one to donate. If you feel compelled to donate food, resources etc. to our ever evolving space, we would gladly welcome your contributions and generosity.

We are so proud of what we can build together when we lean into community, care, and connection. If you are interested in using this space, please reach out to Shani Varricchione or Laura Gigliotti to share times and availability of the space.

On another note, Charlotte Schools has extended the invitation for all families in CVSD to participate in a three part series on digital well being that they are hosting. If you are interested in attending, here is some more information and the sign up for the series. Thanks Charlotte!

With gratitude and excitement,
Angela Filion

PreKindergarten Lottery is now open for 2026-2027!

The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2026-27 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).

Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2026, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.

All applications must be received by February 5, 2026, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.

For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition. More information about an Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports is also available on the website.

Attention WCS MIddle Schoolers

Join the NEW American Sign Language club for grades 5 to 8!

We will meet on Mondays after school, 3-4:20 pm, in the upstairs Kiva room. The late bus is available for transportation home. Sign up permission slips are in the Direction Center.

Contact SAP Counselor Steven Berbeco sberbeco@cvsdvt.org with any questions. First meeting is January 26!

Get Ready to Glide!

This February, we’re launching an exciting Nordic Ski Program & Clinic every Monday and Thursday, designed to get students outside, moving, and discovering the joy of Nordic skiing. Participants will learn fundamental skills, build confidence on skis, and experience the thrill of winter fitness—all in a supportive, fun environment.

Led and mentored by members of the CVU Nordic Ski Team and Mrs. Durant, students will ski alongside experienced athletes who will encourage, coach, and inspire them every step of the way. Beyond learning the basics, this program is about building community, fostering a love for outdoor exercise, and creating a strong feeder pathway to the CVU Nordic Ski Team.

Whether students are brand new to skiing or simply curious to try something new, this program offers them the chance to slide into a lifelong winter sport and become part of the CVU Nordic tradition. Equipment is helpful but not necessary. WCS has some equipment to use.

Sign-ups will be on the school athletics page starting next Tuesday, January 20th. See or email Mrs. Durant with any questions adurant@cvsdvt.org.

Hill Closings

In the event that weather and/or road conditions make it unsafe for our buses to travel hill roads, we will notify parents and/or caregivers of students on those routes with as much notice as possible.

When hills are closed for afternoon bus runs, if no one arrives to meet younger students, they will be brought back to school until arrangements are made for them to be picked up. Please talk with your bus drivers to let them know if you are comfortable letting your child walk home from the drop off location.

We will use the automated SchoolMessenger system to notify families on the hill roads.
