National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Community events include:

  • Fort Saskatchewan: The City of Fort Saskatchewan is hosting a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on September 30 at the Fort Heritage Precinct. The event will include the raising of a 26-foot teepee that has been a community collaborative project.
  • Fort Saskatchewan: The Space: Yoga, Wellness, Meditation is hosting a "Yoga for Truth and Reconciliation" event on Sunday, September 28. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Fort Saskatchewan-based Indigenous Re-Generation Association.
  • Strathcona County: On September 30, Strathcona County is hosting a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event at Broadmoor Lake Park. The event will include guest speakers, Indigenous elders, knowledge keepers, a smudging ceremony, an Honour Walk, interactive displays, and a film screening.
  • St. Albert: The City of St. Albert will hold a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on September 30 at Mission Park, featuring guest speakers, performers, and an Honour Walk.
  • Edmonton: There are a number of events in nearby Edmonton throughout the month, including a "Truth First" talk at MacEwan University, a "Community Day of Reconciliation" at Borden Park, and special programming at Fort Edmonton Park's Indigenous Peoples Experience on September 30.
