The Weekly Highlander
Volume #2
A Message from the Principal
It has been an incredible start to the school year. It has been so exciting to see so many new and familiar faces on campus this week. Our students have gotten to know their teachers, one another, and the behavior expectations that will set them up for success this year. Ms.Swain met with each grade level today to review the policies and procedures and answer any questions students have about the year ahead. The slide deck from this assembly will be sent to you later today so that you are aware of what was discussed with your student.
On Tuesday, we welcome our parents to campus for our Back to School Night, which begins at 6 pm and will conclude at 7:40 pm. You will follow your student's schedule and spend 10 minutes in each period your child has over the school day. Teachers will review the course, materials, and learning objectives for the year. The gates will open at 5:30 pm, and classrooms will open at 5:55 pm, so we can begin promptly at 6 pm. This is an event for parents and guardians, please let your student remain at home while you experience a day in the life of a middle schooler.
On Thursday after school, we will have the first event of the year, a PTA-sponsored Ice Cream Social. Students and families will be able to purchase ice cream treats from the RIO Ice Cream Truck and a portion of the proceeds will go back to Hewes PTA. Additional details can be found in this newsletter.
Please stay connected to Hewes by checking our website and following us on Instagram @heweshighlanders for the latest information and news.

Main Office Location Change
Due to ongoing campus construction, the main office has been relocated to the Activity Center. If you need to sign your student out early or if they arrive late from an appointment, please proceed to the pedestrian gate next to the Activity Center and signs will lead you to our reception area.
School Site Council Nominations
Now is a perfect time to be involved with the Hewes School Site Council. As an elected member of the School Site Council, you will attend four meetings during the school year to discuss the improvements to the campus and have input on the School Site Plan, Safety Plan, and other important information on school functionality. The School Site Council is a chance for you, along with others, to work together to make Hewes the best middle school for your student. We have ONE opening this year on School Site Council.
Please complete THIS interest form by 3:00 PM, Monday, August 26, 2024, if you are interested in being on the ballot for these very important positions.
The meeting dates will be 9/16, 11/4, 2/3, 4/7 at 2:50 PM on the Hewes campus.
ELOP - Extended Learning Opportunities Program
Sixth-grade families interested in the ELOP after-school program need to reach out to Nancy Roman at the YMCA. The best way to connect is to email her directly at nroman@ymcaoc.org. She will be able to provide information about eligibility and registration.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Bring the whole family to our first PTA sponsored event of the year! This Thursday, August 22nd, on the blacktop behind the Activity Center. Gates will open at 2:30 for families to gather. RIO Ice Cream generously donates back a portion of the proceeds to Hewes PTA. RIO Ice Cream accepts cash, Apple Pay, and credit cards.

NEW E-Vehicle Rules for fall of 2024
E- Vehicle Safety Presentation
Parking Permit Requirements for the 2024-2025 School Year
On the school campus, the use of electric vehicles (E-vehicles) is subject to specific guidelines aimed at ensuring safety and accountability. To ride an E-vehicle to school and park on campus, students and their parents or guardians are required to attend an E-Vehicle Safety Presentation facilitated by the Tustin Unified School District and local law enforcement agencies. The purpose is to educate students and families about the laws that pertain to E-Vehicles. Once a student attends the presentation, they are able to purchase a permit for $5 in order to park their E-vehicle on campus. The permit must be displayed on the E-Vehicle in a visible location. Permits can be purchased on campus.
The next presentation will be held at PIONEER MIDDLE SCHOOL on Tuesday, August 20th at 5 pm.
“Go” For Daily Engagement!
You could win a Microsoft Surface Go just for attending school!
The Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) is partnering with Data Impressions & Microsoft to highlight students who model outstanding daily engagement and attendance when healthy. Data Impressions and Microsoft have generously donated Microsoft Surface Go (or similar) devices to continue the TUSD engagement incentive program into a tenth year! One computer will be given away at the end of the school year at every school site in TUSD. All students who maintain daily engagement at TUSD’s schools will have a chance to win!
