Principal's Update Principal's Update

Dear Kenwood Families:

I hope this message finds you safe, healthy, and in the company of loved ones. I’m thinking of you with gratitude and care.

We look forward to meeting with you during conferences on February 12 and 13. Please be sure to sign up to meet with your children’s teachers, in person, virtually, or by phone. Call the main office if you need assistance: 612-668-2760.

We are reaching out to families whose children are currently learning online to ask whether they will return to in person learning on February 18, or will continue in online learning until March 26. Current online families have until Tuesday, Feb. 10 to make their decision and should call the main office to share their decision as soon as possible if we weren’t able to reach you today. Kenwood School is a safe place for learning, thanks to our procedures, protocols, and community support. We hope to see all children back in school very soon!

We are celebrating Black History and Black Brilliance this month. Every class is reading Black Is a Rainbow Color by Angela Joy, participating in a daily quiz related to prominent Black leaders, innovators, and history-makers, and working on grade-level projects that help them develop deep knowledge about Black Brilliance. Ask your children what they’re learning!

During these complex times, it’s so important for our students to participate in a vibrant learning community. The Kenwood staff, our families, and our neighborhood partners have made it possible for Kenwood kids to continue to explore algebraic concepts, learn Taiko drumming, ride strider bikes, write and illustrate personal narratives, sing about freedom and justice, invent new histories and geographies, and become thoughtful and compassionate listeners and advocates. We are so lucky to have each other.

I wish you a peaceful weekend.

Warmly,

Heidi Johnson

When it's winter, Woodchucks go sledding! The PTA is hosting a sledding party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, February 7th. Come enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and sled with us at the south hill across from the Kenwood Rec Center. We will have sleds and helmets to share, or feel free to bring your own.

If you are traveling for the "long weekend" (Feb. 13-17), we respectfully request that you sign up for a virtual conference on the 12th or 13th so that teachers don't have to schedule missed conferences during their planning times.

We encourage everyone to meet with teachers to learn about their children's areas of strength and growth. There's so much to celebrate!

Transportation: If you need transportation to attend in person, please call the main office at 612-668-2726 by Wed. Feb. 11.

Our teachers give so much to our kids every single day. Let's treat them to a special appreciation meal during conferences! We will be providing Pizza for dinner on Thursday, February 12th and snacks for the February 13th. Every little bit helps us show how grateful we are. Thank you for supporting our incredible teachers! Please drop off your items for either day on February 12th to the break room or office by 4pm.

These treats for the break room depend entirely on volunteer contributions of food, drinks, or funds. Families are invited to sign up to bring snacks or contribute via Venmo at @KenwoodPTAMpls. Thank you for helping us show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them! Text Elyse Colpitts (952)200-5059 if you have any questions or need to drop off at a different time. In partnership with the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) and the generosity of our PTA, we are pleased to be able to offer Art Adventure again this year. This program engages students with artwork from the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s collection, encourages creativity, critical thinking, and global awareness through in-depth explorations of art across various cultures and periods. Art Adventure is an opportunity for students to experience art up close and personal through reproductions, technology, and props.

We need parent volunteers, aka Picture People, to introduce classroom students to a variety of preselected artworks from various cultures, places, and eras. No art expertise is needed! Classroom visits can be scheduled based on Picture Person and teacher schedule availability during the months of February, March & April. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Marstal Aamodt marstal.aamodt@gmail.com or if you are familiar with the program and are ready to sign up to support a specific classroom you can do so here.

Please be very cautious when you drop off your students on Penn Ave. in the morning. Drivers have reported that children have run across the street to the playground as buses and cars approach, creating a dangerous situation. Please park on the school side of the street, north of the Kenwood gate and the bus drop-off zone to prevent accidents and injury. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

PLEASE do not park in the staff parking lot on Franklin at dismissal time. The teachers' duty day ends at 4:15, and they must be able to safely leave the parking lot.
