“Back-to-Basics! - Return to sound Tier-1 Instruction”

We are returning to "back-to-basics." An intentional focus on Tier-One instruction to meet the needs of all our students. We are honing our pedagogical skill set to support student learning and mastery.

Sawubona (sou-bo-na)

A Zulu greeting from South Africa that carries significant cultural and social importance. Sawubona translates to "I See You." However, its meaning goes beyond the literal acknowledgment of someone's presence. It can mean human connection: I see and acknowledge our human connection (empathy and understanding).

Sawubona,

Alex

Message from Dr. Nik

Your literacy coaches, SoR facilitators, content coordinators, and school/district administrators are committed to ensuring that every teacher gets the support they need so that every student receives the instruction they deserve.

As promised, Google Slides deck from your pd day. The only document that is not set to Anyone with the Link can view should be the assessment plan. You will be able to access it and all other district documents once you gain access to Schoology. You are more than welcome to email me with any follow-up questions you may have. I will either answer or direct you to the best person to ask if it is not me. 😊

FIRST DAY ATTENDANCE RECORDS

On the first day of school, all students who are not present should be marked as ‘NS’. A student cannot be absent until he/she has attended at least one day in the class. This information is incredibly helpful to office staff/administrators as they adjust student schedules and identify no-show students that need to be withdrawn. Once a student has attended class at least one time, he/she may then be marked absent when not in class.

CLASSROOM PREP:

As you begin setting up your new classroom please be mindful of the following:

  • Do not use hot glue guns on the walls.
  • Mounting items on the brick walls can be tricky. My recommendation would be to use Velcro brand extreme outdoor mounting tape (ONLY for the brick walls).
  • When mounting items onto the dry erase walls, the recommendation is to use painters tape. This prevents destroying the paint.
  • Microwaves, mini fridges, and other household appliances CANNOT be housed inside your classroom. IF YOU HAVE THEM - TAKE THEM HOME

Ms. Brenda

Big News:

  • All Certified Teachers are receiving $150 for his/her 1st Semester Orders.
  • Be careful with your funds: if your order exceeds $150 some items will cut so that the order does not exceed $150.00.

Specialists’ have different funds and order from different sources so we will discuss your orders individually.

Central Office Financial Department is requesting that we use our preferred vendors: Staples & Office Depot vs. Amazon.

  • Asha will be forwarding an Office Depot Product list with contract prices.
  • The advantages of using these companies are generally same products usually cost us less and delivery is quicker.

All orders must be submitted via email to Asha & myself by:

  • Monday, August 14.
  • I’ll be placing all the orders on Tuesday, August 15.
  • Late orders will not be processed.

Any questions, please ask me.

Thank you,

Ms. Brenda

COACHES CORNER COACHES CORNER

ROUTINES & PROCEDURES! ROUTINES & PROCEDURES!

Stormi Johnson: Instructional Coach

ROLL OUT & MONITOR ROUTINES

1. What to Do:

  • Economy of Language: give crisp instructions with as few words

as possible

2. Routines & Procedures 201: Revise and perfect them

  • Revise any routine that needs more attention to detail or is

inefficient, with particular emphasis on what students and teachers

are doing at each moment

  • Do It Again: have students do the routine again if not done

correctly the first time

  • Cut it Short: know when to stop the Do It Again

3. Teacher Radar: Know when students are off task

  • Deliberately scan the room for on-task behavior:
  • Choose 3-4 “hot spots” (places where you have students

who often get off task) to scan constantly

  • Circulate the room with purpose
  • Move away from the student who's speaking to monitor the

whole room

Second Steps News

Second Steps will NOT begin until September 18th! More information will be coming your way!
