In Social Studies this week, students have been creating their own Middle Ages Funko Pop figures as we wrap up our unit on the Middle Ages. Throughout the unit, students have learned about the feudal system and the Crusades. This activity brings it altogether by asking them to choose a feudal social group (Knights, Serfs, Kings/Queens, Clergy, or Nobles) and design a Funko Pop based on their selection. After drawing their figures, students wrote about their group's responsibilities, including what they provide for others and what they receive in return. They then choose between writing a diary entry either describing a typical day in the life of their class or reflecting on their experience fighting in the Crusades. Students created impressive final projects that highlight both their creativity and their ability to support their ideas with evidence in writing. Later this week, students will begin learning about our next unit, the Renaissance, by completing a map of Europe during this time.

Reset of Bathroom Expectations Reset of Bathroom Expectations

On Friday morning, Mrs. Lamothe met with each grade level to discuss ongoing concerns regarding student behavior in the Scott bathrooms.

During these meetings, students were informed about instances of vandalism, including broken toilet paper dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and toilet seats, as well as issues with clogged toilets and pipes. Mrs. Lamothe emphasized that, this year, the school has spent more time and financial resources on repairs than in any previous year during her tenure at Scott.

To address these concerns, three student bathrooms will remain open moving forward. Each of these bathrooms will be monitored by an adult stationed outside to ensure that no more than two students are inside at a time and that all students are acting safely and respectfully. Students were also informed of which bathroom they should use based on their location in the building, and they are expected to use the designated restroom.

Additionally, students were reminded that they must wait for teacher permission before leaving the classroom. There has been an increase in students leaving without a pass, and the current system is designed to limit the number of students in the hallways and restrooms at any given time.

We are hopeful that, with these expectations in place, the bathrooms will be used appropriately and that all students will contribute to maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

March's PBIS Focus... Cell Phones Off and Away March's PBIS Focus... Cell Phones Off and Away

We are excited to share that our March PBIS reward for students who remained in class throughout February will be a Volleyball Knockout Tournament on March 31st during Related Arts classes.

Students who are not eligible to attend will complete a reflective assignment in the auditorium focused on respectful and responsible behavior during that time.

After reviewing our recent data, the PBIS Team has noticed an increase in electronic device use during the school day. In response, our focus for March will be reinforcing our expectation that cell phones remain “Off and Away All Day.” To encourage positive choices, students who are not written up for an electronics violation in March will earn Recess in April as a reward.

What “Off and Away All Day” Means

We are asking families to please review these expectations with your child:

  • Cell phones should be turned off once students enter the school building.

  • Phones should be stored in a bookbag or locker for the entire day.

  • If a student prefers to carry their phone between classes, each classroom has a cell phone locker where phones must be placed upon entering.

  • Students may retrieve their phone when leaving for their next class.

If a student is using their phone during class:

  • It will result in an office referral and detention.

  • Continued referrals may require the student to leave their phone at home or turn it in to the office each morning and pick it up at dismissal.

Why This Matters

There is growing research showing that even having a cell phone nearby can significantly impact students’ ability to focus and learn. Notifications, texts, social media, and videos can easily distract students from instruction and reduce engagement in class.

If you are looking for guidance about when your child may be ready for a phone or how to set parental controls, this resource may be helpful:

Staying in Touch During the School Day

If you choose to have your child leave their phone at home, please know you can always reach them by calling the school’s main office. We are happy to deliver messages or bring your child to the office to speak with you directly.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping us create a focused, respectful learning environment for all students.
