Introduce your students to PETER
PETER O'METER is an augmented reality children's book about a robot who becomes eMotional when his buttons are pushed. It's the perfect story to pair with a quick SEL check in, coloring activity, and interactive augmented reality experience. Here's a 30 minute lesson plan.
1. READ PETER O'METER (10 minutes)
Reading PETER O'METER can be more than just opening the pages of a physical book. There are many ways to engage with this story. You certainly can read the book. It's an engaging and interactive story filled with fun illustrations that take you into a retro-futuristic robot-filled world. However, there is much more to discover about the story as the illustrations come to life with augmented reality when the pages are scanned with the free Quiver app on any device (like a phone or iPad). The AR can be viewed from the eBook version as well. Project the book on your screen and demonstrate the augmented reality or invite students to scan from their devices. Each animated illustration has added movement, music, and "eMotion" to help students empathize with the characters in the scenes. There is also an exclusive animated and uniquely interactive version of the story only available when you invite the author to a virtual read aloud.
Download, print, and color PETER O'METER as you prepare for an amazing interactive augmented reality experience. This sheet is available in the book, coloring book, and FREE on the TeacherGoals website. The sheet is an AR marker of the main character, PETER O'METER, a robot with a newly upgrade eMotion panel, designed through a partnership with Quivervision. Quivervision is known for their amazing coloring pages that retain the coloring from the child as they come to life with AR.
3. Interactive Augmented Reality (10 minutes)
SCAN and INTERACT with PETER using the free Quiver app by Quivervision. As you can see from this demonstration by Quivervision, PETER emerges from the 2D page as a 3D interactive robot. Students can toggle through his eMotions by pressing buttons on the screen. They can also hear about his eMotions, watch colorful animations representing each feeling, and listen to music that reflects his mood. Use this coloring page to check in with your students as they press the button that reflects their own feelings. Use this sheet to quiz students about the story with questions about how PETER felt in any of the six scenarios described.
Give PETER Advice to Calibrate his eMotion Device
1. Which eMotion button could PETER press when Argh-u-lot Bot was damaged from a fall?
2. Which eMotion button could PETER press when Anna Log was doing something dangerous?
3. Which eMotion button could PETER press when Maggie Netic was excluded at recess?
4. Which eMotion button could PETER press when the robots played a fun game of circuit maker?
5. Which eMotion button could PETER press when he needed to settle down after recess?
6. Which eMotion button could PETER press when he returned home to his family?
(Remember, it's okay to feel any which way)
EXTRA IDEAS
Animated Interactive Read Aloud
Invite Tricia Fuglestad, the author, illustrator, and animator of PETER O'METER to read her animated interactive version of her book virtually to your class. There are six instances in the book that ask the reader to actively empathize with PETER as they gather clues from the text and illustrations to give advice about which button to press on his eMotion device. These interactive moments keep students engaged while the animated illustrations on every page of the story fascinate them. Schedule extra time for a author Q & A and/or some trivia about the book & its creation. (Contact below)
