WINTER WEATHER SCHOOL CLOSURE/DELAY START PROTOCOLS
We are kicking off 2025 by helping students to reconnect with their peers and by promoting kindness. Instead of jumping into our next 7 Mindsets unit, we will engage in mini-circles each day. This gives students an opportunity to be noticed and heard, as well as an opportunity to build empathy as we listen to and learn more about each other.
If you have not hosted a mini-circle before, please know it’s really simple and so rewarding.
- Have students sit or stand in a large circle. We want students to be able to make eye contact with you and each other.
- You will introduce a question or a topic. (These are found in the Speaker’s Notes at the bottom of each day’s slides.)
- Let students know their response will be limited to no more than one complete sentence. This is what makes it a mini-circle and helps you share a couple of topics during your scheduled SEL time daily.
- Always start off by answering the question yourself. Being open yourself helps students better relate to you, as well as making sure they understood the topic.
- Go around the circle with each person taking a turn in the order they are seated. This is how you are certain not to miss anyone.
If you are new to this, please let me know how it goes. I would be happy to drop by your classrooms and host a mini-circle if you’d like to experience it as a participant with your students.
