Homework
Reading: Read 20 minutes at least 4 days each week. Reading Log will be in the Take Home Folder
Math: Starting this week, your child will be receiving flashcards to practice their multiplication and division of the facts we are learning that week. Monday they will receive their 2's and 10's flashcards. Please have your child cut out the flashcards and practice them each night. Start with the 2's on Monday and Tuesday and 10's on Wednesday and Thursday. Your child needs to make two different stacks, "I know" and " I need to practice." Then on Thursday night have your child do the two facts practice and bring that in on Friday.
Math
Math: We will continue Unit 2: Multiplication and Division. This is the biggest math unit of 3rd grade and will take us several months to complete. We’ll start by representing multiplication through models, then continue building a deep understanding of these important concepts. It’s a big unit, but I know our students are going to rock it! As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—I’m here to help.
We are beginning to learn our core facts first which are: 2's, 10's, 5's, 1's and 0's. These facts help with learning the other facts we will learn in 3rd grade: 3's, 4's, 6's, 7's, 8's and 9's.
This week we are working on strategies for x2/divided by 2 and x10/divided by 10. Please see the link below to see the exact strategies. As we begin learning the strategies which not only help students with learning the facts fluently and accurately, but also help with larger multiplication and division problems in the future grades. Please make sure your child is practicing these facts at home. The students will take fluency pass-offs each week. These are not for a grade but for them to see what facts they still need to practice. The students need to know their facts in 3 seconds or less to be fluent.
Science
Science: In science, we are starting Lesson 2: Magnetism and Designing Solutions. We with continue the question, " How do magnets affect and object's motion?" The students will explore what items are attracted to magnets and why. They will observe how objects can be pushed or pulled without being touched.
Monday we will be participating in the Freaky Forces in-house field trip. The students will be learning about Sir Isaac Newton and the 3 Laws of Motion. They will be moving through 4 different stations to practice these laws.
