Dear Families,

We’re in the full swing of things now that we’re halfway through the second week of school. One common priority we hear from our families is that you want your child(ren) to have strong foundations in reading. We are taking that charge very seriously this year.

We are setting out this school year to have students spend more time applying their reading skills by having more independent reading time in class. Students are well on their way to becoming strong independent readers. I’ve even had students already report that they are loving this extra time to practice reading, and they want more!

Another important part of the beginning of the school year is ensuring that our students build friendships and feel a sense of belonging. One way we do this is through a morning meeting and closing meeting each day. Morning meetings give time for each student to be greeted, to share something about themselves, and play a game together that builds community. At closing meeting, students reflect on the day and possible goals for the next day. These are all important parts of social and emotional growth.

Mark your calendars for next Thursday, September 17. We’ll have our annual Curriculum Night, 5-6:30 p.m. Get a glance into what is happening in the classroom and gather ideas for ways you can bring learning into your own home. We would love for the whole family to attend!

Have a great week!

Lindsay

Grades K-4 Assessments

During the first months of school, all students participate in universal screening assessments. These assessments measure things like reading (e.g., DIBELS, Capti), math (e.g., MAP), and social, emotional, and behavioral development (e.g., SAEBRS). They provide valuable information to teachers to better understand each student's strengths and learning needs. Find more information on our website about Assessments.

Keeping Our Schools Safe, Together

Every family wants their child’s school to be a safe, welcoming place to learn. Keeping students and staff safe is a shared responsibility across Spring Lake Park Schools — one that includes prevention, preparation, strong partnerships and knowing how to respond if something unexpected happens.

At the beginning of a new school year, we want to share how we work every day to keep our schools safe. Our students, staff and families are a part of that effort.

Our approach to safety and security has many layers. We work to prevent problems, protect our schools, practice how we will respond and learn from what happens so we can continue to improve. Read about our approach to safety and security.
