16 Ways to Prepare Children with Autism for Holidays 16 Ways to Prepare Children with Autism for Holidays

  • Preparation is crucial for most individuals. At the same time, it is important to determine how much preparation a specific person may need. For example, if your son or daughter tends to become anxious when anticipating an event that is to occur in the future, you may want to adjust how many days in advance you prepare him or her.
  • Preparation can occur in various ways by using a calendar and marking the date of holiday events, or by creating a social story highlighting what will happen at a given event.
  • Prepare a photo album in advance of the relatives and other guests who will be visiting during the holidays. Allow the child access to these photos at all times and also go through the photo album with your child while talking briefly about each family member.
  • If your child has difficulty with change, you may want to gradually decorate the house. For example, on the first day put up the Christmas tree, then on the next day decorate the tree, and so on.
  • Engage them as much as possible in the decorating process. For some, it may also be helpful to take them shopping with you for holiday decorations so that they are part of the process.
  • Develop a visual schedule or calendar that shows what will be done on each day.
  • Inform them of the process for removing decorations, since this process may be disruptive for some individuals as well.
  • If having decorations around the house does become disruptive for some, try to revisit pictures from previous holidays that show decorations in the house.
  • If such a book does not exist, use this holiday season to create a picture book of your family preparation and traditions.
  • Consider involving your son or daughter in the process of decorating the house.
  • Once holiday decorations have been put up, you may need to create rules about those that can be touched and those that cannot be touched. Be direct, specific, and consistent.
  • Understand that with some individuals, decorations may not be feasible.
  • If you are traveling for the holidays, arrange to have the child’s favorite foods, books, or toys available. Having familiar items readily available can help to calm stressful situations.
  • Use social stories or other communication systems to prepare them for any unexpected travel delays.
  • If your son/daughter is flying for the first time, it may be helpful to bring your child to the airport in advance to help them become accustomed to airports and planes

  • Use social stories and pictures to rehearse what will happen when boarding and flying the plane as well.

Using Guided Access Using Guided Access

    Quick Tip:

Have difficulty with a student hitting the home button on their iPad to escape the app you want him or her to work in? Use Guided Access. Guided Access limits your device to a single app and lets you control which features are available. This is especially helpful for those students who want to exit an app rather than complete the requested task. Here are the instructions:

How to set up Guided Access:

    1. Go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn scroll down to Guided Access. Turn Guided Access on.

    2. Tap on Passcode Settings, then tap set Guided Access passcode.

    3. Enter a passcode, then re-enter it. Make sure and write down the passcode so you have it to refer to if you or other staff members forget it.

    Start a Guided Access session:

    1. Open the app that you want the student to use. Triple-click the home button.

    2. If you want parts of your screen to stop responding to touch, use one finger to circle those areas. You can move or resize the circle, or tap the X to remove it. If you need training in

these or other higher level function of Guided Access contact AT for training.

    3. Tap Guided Access, then tap Start.

To end a Guided Access session:

Triple-click the home button, enter the Guided Access passcode, then tap End.

Upcoming Parent Trainings Upcoming Parent Trainings

I want to provide information on two local resources for stuttering. Houston Stutter Social for Kids hosts a free get-together once a month for ages 6-17. The activity for December is gingerbread houses. It will be held this upcoming Sunday the 8th in Stafford: More event details are below. There are limited spots available for the December activity, but this is a good resource to keep on your radar for the upcoming year. There is strong evidence that supports the benefits of people who stutter meeting and interacting with other people who stutter. If I could only give one tip that would have the greatest positive impact, it would be for children who stutter and their parents to become involved with the stuttering community. To help achieve this at school, I prioritize scheduling group stuttering therapy, so that the students can learn from each other and validate each other's lived experience.

Additionally, I'm excited that the Houston area will be hosting a FRIENDS One-Day Conference this year. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to get connected with the stuttering community, receive support, and learn more about stuttering. Adults who stutter and speech pathologists are also welcome to register. This event is NOT free, but it is a transformative experience for many who attend. Families can apply for financial assistance through the FRIENDS website. The One-Day Conference is set to be held on February 22nd in Deer Park ISD Educational Resource Center. I will share a website link once they have posted the event on their website.
