Instagram and Teen Girls

This article was a little close to the heart for me with a teen and soon to be teen daughter.

In this New York Times article, Lindsay Crouse (Opinion) reports on recent Wall Street Journal revelations of Facebook’s internal research on the impact of their Instagram app. According to the Facebook survey, “Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.”

“Girls themselves often know Instagram is not good for them,” says Crouse, “but they keep coming back. That’s because social media is addictive.” According to Derek Thompson, it’s “attention alcohol. Like booze, social media seems to offer an intoxicating cocktail of dopamine, disorientation, and, for some, dependency.

Finish That Comic!

Middle school educator @robinksimmons had the brilliant idea of using a Finish this Comic activities from @Jarrett_Lerner to have students write about the Boston Tea Party from alternate perspectives: a fish in the harbor, a spider on the boat, the king… Amazed at the creative ways you can use comics to teach curriculum in a new and engaging way.

Go to https://jarrettlerner.com/activities to find Blank Comic Book Pages, Special Activities, “Finish This Story!” Story Starters, “How to Draw…” Instructions, “Finish This Comic!” Comics, and Drawing/Writing Prompts. All activities are available for free download, and are to be used in educational and/or private settings. They may not be used elsewhere or for other purposes (such as for profit) unless explicit permission is granted.

My favorite however, are all of the gamified templates. They have all kinds of classic games templates, but I love the Break Out/Escape Rooms. What to make a lesson more interactive? Make it Breakout!
