Study Tips for at home: *This is COMPLETLEY OPTIONAL*
Dear CCE Fourth Grade Families,
A little practice each night can make a BIG difference! Use these helpful tips to review our current learning goals and help your child feel confident and prepared for upcoming assessments.
Reading: Authors’ Word Choice
Learning Goal: I can determine an author’s use of words and phrases in grade-level texts.
How to Practice at Home:
- Read for at least 15–20 minutes each night.
- Look for interesting, descriptive, or repeated words and phrases.
- Ask, “Why did the author choose this word instead of another word?”
- Discuss how words help the reader picture a scene, understand a character’s feelings, or create a certain mood.
- Practice using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Ask Your Child:
- What does this word or phrase mean?
- Why do you think the author chose these words?
- How do these words help you understand the text?
Writing: Opinion Writing
Learning Goal: I can write an opinion piece about a topic with reasons supported by facts.
How to Practice at Home:
- Choose a fun topic, such as “Should students have extra recess?”
- State a clear opinion.
- Give at least two or three reasons that support the opinion.
- Include facts or examples that support each reason.
- Finish with a conclusion that restates the opinion.
Remember the Opinion Writing Formula:
Opinion + Reasons + Facts/Evidence + Conclusion
Ask Your Child:
- What is your opinion?
- What reasons support your opinion?
- What facts or examples can you use as evidence?
Science: Changes in the Geosphere
Learning Goal: Understand how Earth's solid materials and landforms change over time.
How to Practice at Home:
- Review the meanings of geosphere, weathering, erosion, and deposition.
- Discuss how wind, water, ice, and gravity can change Earth's surface.
- Look at pictures of mountains, rivers, beaches, or canyons and discuss how they may have changed.
- Compare slow changes, such as weathering, with sudden changes, such as landslides or earthquakes.
- Explain how moving water can carry sediment from one location to another.
Ask Your Child:
- What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
- How can water change Earth's surface?
- What happens when sediment is deposited in a new location?
🇺🇸 Social Studies: Events Leading to the American Revolution
Learning Goal: I can explain how specific events led up to the American Revolution.
Focus Topic: The French and Indian War
How to Practice at Home:
- Review why Great Britain and France fought over land in North America.
- Remember that many Native American nations had their own interests and alliances during the conflict.
- Discuss how the war left Great Britain with significant debt.
- Review how Great Britain began taxing the American colonists to help pay its expenses.
- Explain why colonists became upset about taxes and their lack of representation in Parliament.
Remember This Cause-and-Effect Chain:
French and Indian War → British Debt → New Taxes and Policies → Colonial Protests → Growing Tensions → American Revolution
Ask Your Child:
- Why did the French and Indian War happen?
- How did the war affect Great Britain financially?
- Why did British taxes increase tensions between Great Britain and the colonists?
Math: Numbers and Number Patterns
Learning Goal: I can identify, describe, and extend number patterns and explain the rules that connect numbers.
How to Practice at Home:
- Practice multiplication facts every day for 5–10 minutes.
- Review multiplication facts through 12 × 12.
- Identify the rule in a number pattern.
- Extend a pattern by finding the next three numbers.
- Explain how the numbers change from one term to the next.
- Practice skip-counting and connecting multiplication facts to number patterns.
Try These!
- 4, 8, 12, 16, ___, ___
- 7, 14, 21, 28, ___, ___
- 3, 6, 12, 24, ___
- What is the rule for this pattern: 100, 90, 80, 70, ___?
Ask Your Child:
- What is the pattern rule?
- How do you know what number comes next?
- Can you explain the pattern in your own words?

Reteach/Reassessment Policy
Missing Assignments & NHI: A Quick Guide for Parents
What does NHI mean? NHI stands for "Not Handed In." This means your child has not turned in a required assignment.
How to determine what is missing: You can log into parent backpack to see which assignments are marked NHI. The assignment name, due date, and any related details will be listed there.
What happens if the assignment isn’t turned in: An NHI counts as a 50 in the gradebook until the work is submitted. Once your child completes and turns in the missing assignment, the grade will be updated. If the assignment is never turned in, the NHI will remain a 50, which may significantly impact your child’s overall grade.
Submissions to clear an NHI must be turned in to the teacher within 2 weeks of the original assignment date.
Reassessment Policy:
After a minor assignment is given, students who have not mastered the material will be offered the opportunity to analyze and reflect on their learning, and may request a reassessment. Chandler Creek teachers will reteach concepts students haven’t mastered, then reassess relevant parts of the assignment to promote a mastery of learning concepts prior to a major assessment. Requests for reassessment must be submitted within one week of the minor grade being posted.
eLearning information from GCSD:
Be sure that you child is logging on to eLearning in the event that we have an elearning
GCS has a new eLearning website on the GCS parent page for your reference. It includes authentication, power washing and other support resources for students and parents.
Visitors at Lunch
VISITORS AT LUNCH
We are excited to welcome parents to join their student for lunch in the cafeteria after Labor Day. The cost of an adult lunch for the 2026-2027 school year is $5.55. Visiting adults can pay by cash or check - or by depositing money into your child's lunch account using MySchoolBucks (ahead of time). Unfortunately, our cafeteria is not able to accept Apple Pay or credit/debit cards.
As a reminder, district policy prohibits restaurant / fast food being brought into the cafeteria.
Please be sure to contact your child’s teacher if you wish to join us for lunch.
Water bottles at Chandler Creek
Students at Chandler Creek should ONLY be bringing water in water bottles. Thank you for your help with this at school.
Cell Phone and Attendance Policy
Cell Phone Policy:
Student Personal Electronic Device Policy
The South Carolina Legislature enacted a requirement that school districts adopt a policy that prohibits access to personal electronic devices by students during the school day.
Students cell phones are prohibited between 7:15 and 2:45pm
Student personal electronic devices must be turned off during the school day and must be stored in student bookbags.
Smart watches are considered a “personal electronic device” therefore are not permitted
Student consequences

Step 2: parent phone call
Step 3: admin support
Updated Attendance Policy:
Students are now permitted ten absences for the year, regardless of reason or classification, to remain in compliance with SC Attendance regulations.
Parents are to send in a note within 3 days of an absence stating the reason for and date of the absence. Submit these notes to the office when you receive them from students.
Birthday's
Birthday Treats
We do not host birthday parties in the classroom
Parents may send a treat (cupcakes, cookies, popsicles, etc.) to share with the class~ these can be brought in by student or left in the office for the teacher to grab. Parents are not to come down to the classroom with the treats.
Any food sent must be store bought … unopened … all ingredients listed NO HOMEMADE FOOD.
How can I see my child's grades?

Volunteers in the Classroom
School Visitor and Volunteer Guidelines
Greenville County Schools (GCS), in an effort to ensure the safety of all of our students, has implemented additional security checks for school volunteers. All volunteers must submit an online application to the district and receive clearance from the district before volunteering at any school/center or chaperoning any school field trip.
Volunteers are now identified by two different categories ~ Level I or Level II. The application is the same for level I and level II (you must be 18 or older to become a volunteer). Volunteer Application Form
LEVEL I - This level requires the presence and supervision of a GCS employee at all times. Level I volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school (this is the current process each time you check into a school and/or district office). Level I volunteers may volunteer in classrooms, work in the Media Center, and participate in school activities on campus as long as staff members are present. Level I volunteers must sign in each time they volunteer. Photo identification must be presented each time for verification.
LEVEL II –This level allows interaction with students without a GCS employee present. Level II volunteers must have a National Sex Offender Registry check conducted every time they volunteer at the school as well as a criminal background check good for three years. Chaperones for field trips are required to be a Level II volunteer, regardless of the destination (YOU MUST BE 21 or older TO BE A FIELD TRIP CHAPERONE) .
Additional information can be found at https://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/Parents/main.asp?titleid=volunteers
