Dear Parent/Guardian:

There are many ways to measure your child’s learning and it is natural for every student to have academic strengths as well as areas where they may need more support and improvement. Your child’s teacher uses report card grades, classroom work, teacher observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete picture of your child’s learning. Each year, students across the state participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child will take the following tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts and math, required tests in grades 3–8 and 11

  • California Science Test (CAST), a required test in grades 5 and 8 and 11

This year, students at Brookhaven Elementary will take the summative assessments between May 4-28, 2026. Your child’s teacher will provide their specific testing dates and times.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can:

  • Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn, and they should not be anxious or scared.

  • Explore the practice tests with your child at caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.

  • Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their best and are there to help, every step of the way.

You will receive your child’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.

To learn more about these tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at ca.startingsmarter.org/, or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District and Brookhaven Elementary are home to outstanding students, teachers, and programs and together we encourage full participation in CAASPP testing to ensure our students and schools earn the recognition they deserve.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or Principal Laura Fisher at (714) 986-7110 or LFisher@pylusd.org.

Perseverance

Students demonstrate the trait of perseverance by continuing to perform their responsibilities and pursue their goals with vigor and tenacity despite frustrations, mistakes, setbacks, and other obstacles that make their tasks difficult or seem impossible. They resist temptations and pressures to give up or quit, choosing instead, to persist as long as they are able.

Key Beliefs:

I will be a better student if I act on the following beliefs:

  • When something doesn’t work right, try again and again.
  • I am able to resist temptations and pressures to give up or quit, choosing instead to persist as long as I can.
  • I will always finish what I start.
  • I can learn to face and accept what happens in my life.
  • I need to grow from my experiences, including the ones that hurt.

"250 Acts of Kindness" Summer Challenge

This summer, our school is inviting students and families to take part in the United States of Kindness challenge. In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, people across the country are committing to complete 250 Acts of Kindness in 2026. Acts can be big or small and can happen at home, in your neighborhood, or anywhere you see an opportunity to help someone else.

To make it easy to get started, sign up on the United States of Kindness website and check out the resources like ideas for acts of kindness, a challenge board, and a color-by-number tracker students and families can use over the summer. Follow United States of Kindness on social media for ideas and updates: Facebook and Instagram @USofKindness

We look forward to sharing stories of kindness when school begins again.
