Thank you to our Special Education Team for the first Parent's Night Out event. With 21 students in attendance, families were appreciative of the extra "kid free" time. We know this makes for a long day and just know it is so appreciated.
Thank you to Mrs. Maresh for your hard work with our SEL reporters, sharing slides for class meetings, and being there for our students when technical difficulties create hurdles and create real examples of resilience building.
Thank you schoolwide for all those who have jumped in to provide extra coverage as needed. We've had a lot of needs requiring subs and October germs have officially arrived, so it is appreciated for everyone that has made it happen for kids.
From families:
Big thanks to Mrs. Johnson for everything you do for the kids! Your creativity and the way you teach them about respect, kindness, and caring for others are truly wonderful. We feel so lucky to have you as their 1st grade teacher, and we really appreciate all the love, thought, and effort you put into making their classroom such a special place. Thank you for everything you do! ❤️
Thank you to the Special Education Team for coordinating Thursday's Parents' Afternoon Out! Our boys loved this "bonus" time with their teachers & friends. The activities & pizza dinner all got rave reviews. We appreciate the ongoing support from our incredible Sunray staff.
BIG thanks to Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Antoniou, Mrs. Hedrick, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Moore, and all Alvey staff who promoted and/or participated in this year's Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV) Buddy Walk on Saturday, 10/10. Our student loved celebrating with his teachers. Having the love & support of our fellow Sunrays on this special day in the local Down syndrome community means so much. You're awesome!
Alvey Safety
October 19-25: America’s Safe Schools Week
We've had some terribly tragic stories in the news lately and we can only look at our own systems and practices when these things happen. No person ever thinks something could happen to them or be that school. We continue to take safety, supervision, and observation of situations seriously.
We ask that you do the same and if something doesn't seem right - say something!
Cardiac Emergency Response Team Drill - October 19
Tomorrow, October 19, designated staff members will be running a Cardiac Emergency Response Team Drill during the day. This drill does not involve students directly but will result in the school being put into a hold.
During this drill students may see staff members moving to a designated location with an AED or other medical equipment and may observe the start of CPR on a CPR test dummy.
This is just a drill and will ensure that our team is prepared if ever a true cardiac emergency. Students will be notified that this is a drill.
Math and Reading Reports and Support
Parent Reports will be shared from beginning of the year assessments.
VALLSS - Grades K-2 and individual students in grades 3-5.
STAR Reading - Grades 3-5
Momentum Math - Grades 1-5
Grades 3-5 Math/Reading Tutoring Groups with Ms. Kim (Math) and Ms. Penn (Reading) have been identified and parent permission forms coming home. These student groups are based upon the previous year's SOL data as applicable, beginning of the year testing, and/or teacher recommendation.
Grades 1-3 VALLSS groups are for students who fell in the high risk category. These groups will be ran by Ms. Penn.
Congratulations to our Student Council Association Board
Report Cards
We are wrapping up quarter one soon and report cards will be posted to Parent Vue on November 12. If you have not already done so, please sign up with your child's teacher for a conference time in November.
Bathrooms Etiquette
K-2 - we have increasingly seen reports of students peeking under stalls creating an uncomfortable situation for students. We will be reviewing with students and appropriate way to look and see if a stall is occupied
3-5 - students in the boys bathroom have recently been wetting toilet paper and throwing it on the ceiling tiles. This has created a mess in the bathroom and also a safety concern as those tiles are fire retardant and can be compromised by these actions. We are looking into the students participating in doing this and will contact those families directly.
Please talk with your children about this and the respect for others and school property.
