A Word from Your Career Coach A Word from Your Career Coach

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Welcome Back, Parents! You will probably hear and read those words quite a bit over the next few weeks—and perhaps well into September! That’s because all of us at Mt. Hebron High School are excited to welcome you and your students back for another school year. And, of course, a very special welcome to our 9th-grade families and students who are new to MHHS!

As your Career Coach, I want to encourage your students to stop by and visit me. You can find me in the office with the bright ORANGE rug!

So, why should students come see me? My role as Career Coach is also connected to Maryland’s Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, which emphasizes preparing students for success in college, career, and life. In other words, career readiness is not something that begins senior year—it is a process that develops throughout a student’s high school experience.

Where Should Your Student Be on Their Career Journey?

Think of it as a progression:

9th Grade – EXPLORING
At this stage, students are beginning to discover how their personal strengths, values, interests, and skills connect to potential careers. They should also begin building awareness of career opportunities, including high-wage and high-demand fields.

10th & 11th Grades – PREPARATION
Students begin putting their interests and career goals into action. This may include taking courses aligned with their interests, participating in career-related workshops and events, exploring internships and apprenticeships, developing professional skills, and gaining experiences that help them prepare for their future goals.

12th Grade – READINESS
By senior year, students should have a clear postsecondary plan—whether that means attending college, entering the workforce, pursuing an apprenticeship, joining the military, or taking another pathway. They should be developing the academic, technical, and professional skills needed to take their next step with confidence.

And parents, you are an important part of that journey, too! If you have questions about career exploration, internships, apprenticeships, employment opportunities, or resources available to your student, please feel free to reach out. I am always happy to connect.

Professionally speaking… the future starts now.
