Harvest Home: III. Harvest Moon

Creative Listening

This week in Music students in Grades 3 – 5, creatively listened to the piece Harvest Moon by the English Composer and Flautist William Alwyn.

With paper and pencil at hand students were invited to listen to the music while moving their pencil around the page to reflect their feelings about the movement of the musical piece. Students were then asked to turn their paper 90 degrees to repeat the creative listening process.

During a third listening experience students were encouraged to add words to their listening “map” to describe how the musical piece made them feel. Students eagerly volunteered and shared their listening maps with classmates. Several students expressed feeling calm, warm, comforted and creative.

Kudos to Mrs. Van Tine for engaging students in such an enjoyable learning experience that was a pleasure for Ms. Majeed and Mr. Bertani to observe. Families are invited to try this creative listening experience at home.
