A Letter From Mr. Feeney

October 8, 2026

The Four Elements

Many of us are familiar with the four elements, the fundamental building blocks that Socrates and other philosophers proposed make up all matter in the universe: earth, air, fire, and water.

But do we know about the four elements that make up who we are?

I believe that each of us is a combination of four parts that not only make us unique and complex individuals, but also create rich experiences that go deeper than surface level. The more that our four elements – Body, Soul, Heart, and Mind – operate in harmony, the more integrated and fulfilling our lives are; the more they are at odds with each other, the more sick, sad, and confused we become.

Unfortunately, we tend to compartmentalize the elements. In the classroom, we focus primarily on our mind. In relationships, it’s our heart. Our bodies get attention at the gym or at the hospital. Our souls are often ignored.

We might like to pretend that one element is more important than another, but each has equal value, and each affects the others, whether positively or negatively.

An integrated life is when all four parts work together as one.

As we approach fall break, how can you attend to all of the four elements?

Thank you,

Sam Feeney

Assistant Principal of Athletics

SVA Theater presents Little Women

SVA Theater presents Little Women by Kate Hamill. October 22nd, 23rd and 24th at 6:30pm. Tickets on sale Monday, October 19th.

Play Synopsis: Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian young lady. She’s improper and headstrong, and one day she’s going to be a great American novelist. As she and her sisters grow up in the middle of the Civil War, they strive to be brave, intelligent, and imaginative young women. But as adulthood approaches, each sister must negotiate her private ambitions with society’s expectations. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class, and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women.
