A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

Welcome back! I hope spring break brought your family some time together! We are excited to be back on campus and look forward to finishing the year strong.

April is a very busy month at Forest Hills. Please be sure to check your email regularly for updates from the school and your child's teacher. Also, if your address, email address, or phone number has changed this year, please visit our office to update your contact information. This will ensure you receive all messages from the school.

On Monday, April 8th, students will be given a pair of Nasa approved safety glasses to view the eclipse! The school will also be providing Moon Pies as a fun eclipse snack! We are excited to experience this special day together. In order to participate in viewing the eclipse, students must have a signed permission form. Forms will be sent home the first week of April.

Registration for the 24-25 school year is still open! Our kindergarten is full, but we are accepting enrollment in all other grades 1st-5th. Please remember that all current students must register for next year. Also, please remember that due to the K-6 transition, current Forest Hills students have the option to enroll at Hibbett for the 24-25 school year. Any new student who was waitlisted for kindergarten has the option to enroll at Hibbett or any other FCS elementary school. Please call me with any questions.

If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is learning so much in April! In Open Court Reading we are finishing up our letters and sounds, and are so excited about our decoding words progress. We are moving on now to reading sentences fluently. Keep practicing reading 20 minutes each night, child reading to grown-up. We also are writing make-believe stories. You can help your child by having him/her write one sentence a day to make a story, helping to sound out words as needed. In math we will be learning about teen numbers. These are numbers 11-19. You can help by practicing these numbers with your child at home (recognizing, writing & matching # to amount). In our Unit Studies this month we will study life cycles: egg to chicken, caterpillar to butterfly, plants like flowers.

1st Grade

This month in first grade we are working on our study of roots and seeds. We are learning about plants and their unique characteristics. We are working on our increasing fluency goal of 59 words per minute by the end of the month. We have also begun spelling tests as we prepare for 2nd grade.
In math we are working on adding and subtracting 10's to 2 digit numbers as well as adding two 2 digit numbers together. We are continuing to review time to the hour and 1/2 hour and recognizing all 4 coins and their values.

We are looking forward to our spring field trip on Friday, April 19 to Isbell's Farm. Students will engage in hands on learning about farm life, plants, and mining.

2nd Grade

Second grade is working hard to prepare for the upcoming ACAP assessments! Each morning during tier II time, students are reviewing skills that were flagged as their weakest domain on the most recent IReady diagnostic. Students have practiced their typing skills so they will feel confident when submitting their written responses on ACAP. We hope to continue to challenge students so that everyone finished the year strong!

We began our "Plants and Animals" unit in reading. We are learning about their relationships and how they rely on one another. In math, we are introducing geometry and spiral reviewing skills taught previously in the school year. Please continue checking your child's folder for important information, reading with your child, and looking over worksheets/skills that are sent home each night.

Second grade relay day will be Friday, May 17th. We hope you will make plans to cheer on your second grader that day!

3rd Grade

Welcome Back 3rd Graders!! We hope you all had a restful and fun Spring Break!! Looking ahead to this month, there are so many important things on the calendar. We will have the closing ceremony to our Super Citizen program on Tuesday, April 2nd. We will be honoring Officer Chris Woods as our Super Citizen hero. We are so thankful for all he does for our school!!

To kick off our ACAP testing we will have a pep rally on Monday, April 8th!! This will prepare us to Rock the Test!! Please remember that it is very important to have your child at school on ACAP testing days. They also need to get a good night’s rest and eat a healthy breakfast. We will take the Reading ACAP on April 9th and 10th. The Math ACAP will be given on April 22nd and 23rd. Our students have learned so much this school year and we can’t wait to see how well they preform on the ACAP test.

4th Grade

Reading and Science go hand in hand this unit. We are reading tales, informational texts, and poems about animal and plant adaptations. The students have loved getting to research some of these topics as well. ACAP Reading Test is April 9th and 10th. ACAP Science Test is April 18th.

4th graders are hard at work on the Geometry and Measurement unit. This is the last unit before taking the Math ACAP at the end of the month on April 23rd.

We had a wonderful field trip to Montgomery the week before Spring Break. We toured the State Capital, the State House (Senate & House of Representatives), and the Archives and History museum. We took a trip back to the pioneer days at Old Alabama Town and saw a one-room school house, a shotgun house, a dry goods store, a doctor's office, and an old church.
