PRESCHOOL NATURE EXPLORATION
Our preschoolers have been exploring the wonderful world of trees the past few weeks! As part of their learning, students discovered leaf pigments through a hands-on science activity! They placed leaves between sheets of paper and tapped them with a hammer to release the leaves' natural pigments, revealing beautiful colors that are hidden inside. This fun experiment encouraged our students to explore nature, make observations, and discover all of the science behind the colors of leaves!!
A DAY AT THE FARM
A Wonderful Day at Tranquility Farms!
Our kindergarteners had a wonderful day on their field trip to Tranquility Farms! We couldn't have asked for better weather or a more memorable experience. The students enjoyed a hayride to the pumpkin patch, where they had the exciting opportunity to pick their own pumpkins, corn, and gourds. They were absolutely thrilled!
Our trip tied in perfectly with our classroom learning, as we have been exploring all things pumpkins. The students have been learning about the different parts of a pumpkin and the life cycle of a pumpkin. They were especially excited to discover how pumpkins grow, and many students couldn't wait to go home and plant their own!
In addition to exploring the farm, the kindergarteners had a great time playing and socializing with their classmates on the playground. They especially loved eating the delicious donuts and drinking the apple cider.
It was a fantastic day filled with learning, laughter, and wonderful memories!
SECOND GRADE RESPECT
Hello Second Grade Families!
We have been working hard this month learning all about respect! We read the book Spookley and learned how to treat others with respect and kindness even when people (or pumpkins!!) are different from us.
Second graders have been becoming Big Kid Readers through our first reading unit of the year. We got to read in book clubs and with reading partners! In writers workshop students have been writing small moment stories and are learning to add comparisons, adjectives and make catchier beginnings and endings. We have also been learning to add and stack more than two numbers!
And of course, we got to celebrate Halloween! What a fun day! I hope everyone has a great weekend Trick or Treating with their families!

BOARD GAME STRATEGY
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to mention something that we have recently been discussing in our classroom- We have been talking about how simple board games are a wonderful, often overlooked way for us to build academic and social skills.
Some reasons why we said this to be true is because as children play certain board games/strategy games, they strengthen their reading skills, practice fine motor skills, and use descriptive language and creative thinking. Games also help children solve problems: they can make a plan, test ideas, learn from mistakes, and even try strategies such as process of elimination. Not only this, but we also discussed how playing with others gives children practice communicating, taking turns, and working as a team.
Keeping these things in mind, we have been really trying to take small chunks of free time in our classroom to implement some of these games. Pictionary and the Island Game (category game) have been two of our classroom favorites. Let me give you some examples of how these games really can strengthen a student’s mind; Pictionary lets students read and decode a word, understand it well enough to draw, and practice fine motor skills whilst drawing. During Pictionary, students may even notice that peers are not guessing their word and decide to restart; being able to start over is a major skill that most people do not think much of! The Island Game (category game) encourages language vocabulary, out-of-the-box thinking, problem solving and process of elimination. Although as adults, we typically think that games should be implemented after work, I can tell you with full confidence that sometimes games are a great way to disguise work! I hope this is helpful!

FIELD OF FLAGS FUNDRAISER
DAV’s Field of Flags empowers our community to set up fields of American flags, all to honor local veterans and raise critical funds to support our ill and injured heroes. Each flag represents one veteran – and our unwavering commitment to serving all veterans after they’ve sacrificed so much for our country. All donations raise critical funds to support DAV’s life-changing services for veterans in need and their families. This year, Stillwater school is coming together to honor the men and women who have served our country. Our goal is to raise $2,500 for disabled veterans and create a special display of 250 American flags—one flag for each year of our nation’s history.
Sponsor a flag for $10 and help us reach our goal of 250 flags. Together, our school community can honor 250 years of America while giving back to veterans who have sacrificed in service to our country. Please see the link below.
