Red Wing Public Schools was awarded a $40,000 aiEDU Catalyst Grant over the summer. As a result, AICE Hub members spent several weeks planning the district's inaugural Student AI Literacy Day, then provided professional development Oct. 27 to high school staff. Students then spent Friday, Oct. 31, learning about the benefits and pitfalls of this rapidly growing technology.

For information on how this supports the Portrait of a Winger Graduate and aligns to Flight Path 2030, please attend Flight Path 2030 Community Forum scheduled for the evening of Dec. 9 -- more details to come. Learn more about the five-year initiative by visiting the webpage.

Building community through restorative practices Building community through restorative practices

Eighth graders divided into two groups on Friday, Oct. 31. Each group spent half the day learning about restorative practices and half the day attending AI Literacy Day sessions (see story above).

Soul Space, Goodhue County Education District and Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) coordinated the event with the high school. MDE says that restorative practices -- which are drawn from the traditions of Indigenous people and communities of color around the world -- can benefit students and improve school climate.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education website, the practices are grounded in a belief that people are profoundly relational, interconnected and inherently good. Restorative practices include ways of creating community that honors the importance of relationships amongst all members in the community; as well as practices to repair relationships when harm has been caused. RP address the needs all people impacted by the harm.

Kylie Dahl holds her Student Spotlight certificate with Red Wing School Board Chair Ryan Riester (left) while Twin Bluff Principal Patrick holds Mayor Gary Iocco's Kylie Dahl Day Proclamation. The seventh grader addressed the School Board Monday night, touching on highlights from having won Red Wing's Mayor for a Day essay contest.

If I were mayor for a day ... If I were mayor for a day ...

By Kylie Dahl

Grade 7, Twin Bluff Middle School

If I were mayor for a day, I’d repair homes, start a program for the special needs children for them to get the health care they needed, where the city would take 65% of the cost. I would also make sure that the downtown areas wouldn’t be affected by flooding by putting more money towards preventing the flooding from reaching higher than the playground.

If I were mayor for a day, I understand that Red Wing wants the mayor to be active in the Red Wing arts community, seeing as we have an entire art festival dedicated to the arts community. But I’d put money into musical theatre productions. I’d also try to get a better swimming pool; the slides are kind of boring, if I’m being honest.

I’d give better funding to the Red Wing police department. I haven’t heard of anything bad, but I want them to have the resources to do what they need to do. But most importantly, I’d make sure that every neighborhood in Red Wing is a safe place to live.

Red Wing isn’t where I was born, so I can’t call it my hometown, but it feels like it more than anything, with how welcoming and exciting it is. I just wish it had a Chick-fil-A like Dallas.

Measles reported in neighboring counties Measles reported in neighboring counties

Olmsted County reported three confirmed cases of measles last month. The two cases reported last week are known, unvaccinated contacts of the child whose case was reported Friday, Oct. 17, county officials said. Dakota County was the site of a major cluster of measles cases, with at least 13 of Minnesota's 23 cases in 2025 to date.

Measles is a serious disease caused by a virus that spreads through the air when someone breathes or coughs. Measles can spread easily, especially in schools, so it’s important to know how to prevent it and what to do if someone in your home gets sick.

The MMR vaccine – Measles, Mumps, Rubella – is the best way to protect against measles. If your child has obtained an exemption for the MMR vaccine, they could be asked to remain home from school and other activities for 21 days or longer if they are exposed to measles.

If a family member gets measles, or your unvaccinated child is exposed, the school will guide you on how to quarantine (stay home and out of school) and access educational support like homebound instruction to keep everyone safe.

More information about the risks of measles disease and the safety and importance of MMR immunization can be found on Measles Basics on the Minnesota Department of Health website.
