"How do you measure a year in a life?"

This famous line is from one of my favorite musicals, Rent, which asks us to consider how we mark our years - is it really through midnights and cups of coffee? Is it through milestones or daylight? How do we really measure 525,600 minutes?

Milestone itself is kind of a funny word for marking important events that signal an age. When you get down to it, the word itself was actually meant for travel - stones would mark the distance while traveling by highway (and in modern times, we still see signs that mark the distance to a city or town). There's this idea of traveling on a journey - life itself is a road after all.

This year marks a special milestone for the Glen Grove Community Project. We are celebrating 5 years as a formalized initiative in our Gator community. What started as a conversation among a few teachers has become an experience our Gators get to have every year. We began by asking questions and learning what makes our community special, and grew by celebrating with everyone at our events and being a resource for students, staff, and the community at large.

For us at the Glen Grove Community Project, the years have been measured by newsletters, events, conversations, joy, celebrations, learning, growing, pictures, and smiles. We have been so lucky to travel on this journey with everyone.

So, maybe that word milestone isn't so outlandish to use after all - and just because you pass a milestone doesn't mean that the journey comes to an end. It's a reminder of where we have come from and to look forward to the many milestones ahead.

Thank you for being on this journey with us.

To remind us of where we came from, here is a video from the first year of the GGCP!

The practice of "Zakat" or "Sadaqah" (charity) is key for those who celebrate Ramadan. Acts of giving, especially giving meals to the poor, are just one of the many ways that people reflect on how to be better human beings during this month of celebration and fasting. Here are some local organizations you can donate your time or money to. Click each image to learn more about each organization.
