Why is Canvas helpful?

All teachers at JCMS use Canvas to post their daily agendas and assignments. It's a great way for students to have access to their work if they have to miss school. Parents can also follow their student(s) to also have access to the information.

Before and After School Activity Procedures

Student safety is our top priority, and we want families to secure knowing their kids are safe. For that reason, JCMS students cannot leave school grounds when attending a before or after school activity. Students will not be readmitted to an activity after school once they have left. Exceptions can be made if a parent is dropping off something to the student, but they must tell an adult why they are leaving.

Activities include:

  • REAL
  • ESS
  • All athletic events
  • Practices (band, orchestra, chorus, athletic, academic team, etc.)
  • Clubs
  • Dances
  • Meeting with a teacher
  • Anything that requires to come to school early or stay late

Please make every effort to pick up your child promptly after an activity. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Any middle school student attending a FCPS high school game must be accompanied by an adult. Any middle school student attending a FCPS high school game must be accompanied by an adult.

Restrooms

We have been finding multiple students in the same restroom stall during class change or when on hall passes. There is no reason multiple students should be in a stall; therefore, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12 any students found in the same stall will receive a disciplinary consequence.

  • 1st offense - half day of RESET
  • 2nd offense - full day of RESET
  • 3rd offense - To be determined by administration

We will go over this with the students on Monday morning and for several days following. Hopefully, this will improve bathroom behavior and help students get to class in less of a rush.

Please Complete - Student Release Authorization

For the safety of our students, we use the following procedure for student early dismissal.

The person picking up the child must:

  • have a valid picture ID. We enforce this.
  • be listed in Infinite Campus or be a person authorized by the parent to pick up. (See form link below)
  • be over 18 years of age.

Students need to turn in an absence note for early checkouts as well as all day absences.

Parents may use the link below to add people to their child's pick up list. The email used on the form must be the email for the parent listed in Infinite Campus.

Student Release Authorization

Please contact Cassandra Cowan if you have questions.

Missing Assignments?

Every Tuesday afternoon, we will send parents an email listing any work your child may be missing. These emails are auto-generated from Infinite Campus, so please contact your child's teachers if you have questions.

The program pulls missing work even if an absence is excused. We hope it will help keep our kids on track. You will not receive an email if your child does not have missing assignments.

Infinite Campus Parent Portal is another way to monitor your child's work.

Staying Connected with the JCMS Eagle Eye News

Parents - We know students are not great about telling you dates/times of events at school, and we want to help you out!

Each day at Jessie Clark, we show the morning news - the morning news is where students find out about lunch, sports tryouts, club meeting times and other important information. This news show is uploaded to YouTube everyday - so if you want to know what's going on at JCMS - it's a great place to get information. If you subscribe to the channel, you'll get notified each day of that day's morning news.

It's Hot Outside!

The National Weather Service predicts a heat wave this week. Activities outdoors may be limited due to the excessive heat index. The air conditioning is working in the building at this current time, so the heat should not impact indoor activities.

Please take this time to view the JCMS Dress Code. Students out of dress code will be given a negative focus tap in eOS and/or be asked to call home for other clothing. Two negative focus taps for dress code earns a one hour detention. Dress code has been reviewed each day with the students.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Important things to know -

The doors open for student arrival at 8:40am. Students may not enter the building early unless they are in the REAL program. Our teachers are not required to be her before 8:40am, so no one will be available to supervise the students.

6th grade

  • Report to your team area upon arrival. (The team name is in the "Homeroom" box on the student schedule.)
  • Teachers will then direct the students to the right room.
  • Students do not need their school supplies on the first day. Please wait until Thursday to bring them.

7th grade

  • Report to your team area upon arrival to pick up your schedule. (The team name is in the "Homeroom" box on the student schedule.)
  • Students will remain in their team areas until 9:05am when they will move to 1st hour.
  • Please make sure to have at least a folder, notebook and pencil. The teachers will review what supplies are needed on Thursday.

8th grade

  • Report to homerooms to pick up your schedules. The homerooms are alphabetical -
  • Pod A: A - Hea
  • Pod B: Hei - Men
  • Pod C: Mer - Zea
  • After picking up schedules, 8th graders will report directly to 1st hour.
  • Please make sure to have at least a folder, notebook and pencil. The teachers will review what supplies are needed on Thursday.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up

At the request of our neighbor businesses, please do not wait in their parking lots to drop off or pick up your children. You can be ticketed. You are welcome to wait on the side streets and have your students cross at the crossing guards.

Please only drop off or pick up your students using the car rider lane. The staff parking lot in front of the entrance and bus lane are not to be used for safety reasons.

Thank you!

Buses

Please use this link to look up your child's bus number and pick up time. Please look up both morning and afternoon because the bus is not always the same. Teachers will also review bus info before dismissal.

Middle and high schools do not use bus tags, so it is very important for the students to know what bus they ride. We will have plenty of adults outside to assist them.

Since this is the first day of school, buses could be late. However, please call the school if a bus not arrive at all @ 859-381-3036.

Car Riders

Enter through the car rider lane.

  • If going out bound Clays Mill toward Man O War, it is the first entrance.
  • If going in-bound Clays Mill toward downtown, it is the second entrance.

Students may not be dropped off in the staff parking lot. They would have to cross between buses which is a safety issue.

Walkers

If walkers have to cross Clays Mill to get to school, they need to use the crosswalk with the crossing guards. This includes students who are dropped off across the street.

Absence Excuses and Letters

Students have 3 days to turn in an absence excuse (parent note or doctor note) once they return to school from an absence. They are marked unexcused until that note has been turned in, and Ms. Cowan updates excuses daily. FCPS sends an auto-generated letter with my name on it when a student hits 3, 6 and 10 unexcused absences or tardies warning of the potential of truancy.

More times than not, students have the notes in their backpacks and never turned them in, but Ms. Cowan cannot change the absence reason once the month is complete and closed out in Infinite Campus. Please reinforce to your students to turn notes in to the front office when they arrive in the mornings. We can also accept emails from the email account that's listed in Infinite Campus or they can be faxed.

Thank you,

Jennifer Kendall

Electronics Policy

Students are allowed to have their cell phones, but they should be turned off and not in use (ie: in pocket, backpack or locker. Consequences for use of electronic devices (phones, AirPods/Wireless Headsets/Smartwatches):

  • Classroom

    • 1st offense: Teacher takes phone for the remainder of the class period

    • 2nd+ offense: Teacher takes phone for the remainder of the day

    • For persistent offenses, teachers may submit a discipline referral that documents the interventions attempted & parent contact made by the teacher.

  • Common Areas and Hallways

    • Teacher should confiscate the phone and turn it into the office. The student can pick it up at the end of the day.

If you need to reach your child or send a message, please call the office. We will get a message to your child or have them call you. Phones are a HUGE distraction that we are trying to minimize.
