ACCESS is an English language proficiency assessment administered to students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). It is given annually to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. If your child is serviced by the ESOL program, then he/she will be required to take the ACCESS assessment.

Need books for your child?

Visit Teasley Parent Resource Room in the media center to check out books. You may also have your student stop by to get books. These books are purchased with Title I funds and have no time restrictions, so you may keep them for as long as you need them for. Feel free to stop by the Family Resource Room at TMS or contact Yudy Soro at 770-721-5424 or yudy.soro@cherokeek12.net

Reading and comprehension go hand in hand

While it is important that students read on a consistent basis to increase fluency and knowledge, it is also important to help them make sense of what they are reading. In school, students learn different strategies to help them process what they read. Below are 3 suggestions parents can use to support their student's comprehension at home:

3-2-1 Strategy

When reading books or magazines, have your child use the 3-2-1 strategy. Ask them for:

3 things they discovered

2 things they found interesting

1 question they have

Word Parts

Help your child use word parts (roots, prefixes, and suffixes) to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word or using context clues to confirm the meaning of a word. For example, words that start with "in" to mean the opposite (or "not") of the word - insane, or “not” sane, independent, or “not” dependent, and invalid, or “not” valid.

Citing Evidence

Citing evidence means providing examples from the text in order to prove that the information is true and accurate. Help your child practice this skill by asking them to cite evidence from the book they are reading - Here are some sentence starters for identifying what in the text you read led you to your idea:

The text says…

The author wrote…
I know this because…

For example…
Based on the text…
I think _____ because…
Based on what I read…
The graphic showed…
On page ___, the author said…
From the reading, I know that…
In paragraph ___, the author wrote…
According to the text/passage…

Book Fair Announcement

Please note that there will not be a book fair this year. The company that we previously worked with is no longer servicing middle schools. We value the book fair experience and hope to find an alternative company for next year.

In the meantime, encourage your student to utilize any of these resources:

- Media Center at Teasley, where students can check out up to 2 books every 3 weeks.

- Sora and Destiny, which offers a selection of online and audio books.

- Parent Resource Room inside the Media Center.

- Teasley Lending Library (pictured here), outside the school by the car line. Students can grab a book, and return it when they are done.

- Book Swap at Teasley, located in the Media Center. Students can bring a book from home and swap it for another book.

- Your local library: students can use their student ID (lunch number) to check out books.
