Weekly Update

Interim Superintendent's Message:
SPS Community,
Next week (May 4-8) is Teacher Appreciation Week across the country.
We refer to it as Educator Appreciation Week, however, because we truly believe that all of our staff members are educators -- teachers, paraprofessionals, coaches, counselors, administrative assistants, school related personnel, nurses, food service workers, bus drivers, monitors, custodians, maintenance team, and more – each of whom positively impact the school experience of our children and families.
Educator Appreciation Week in Salem is our chance to show our educators how much we value them. Throughout the week, we shower our staff with raffles, gift card giveaways and discounts from various retail stores, restaurants, cafes, and more. Of course, Teacher Appreciation Week in Salem would not be possible without the generosity of our merchants and local businesses, who undoubtedly value the work of our educators.
We also want to hear from our families and alumni. We’ve created a Google form (see here) on which families and alumni can express their gratitude for one or more of our educators, to be shared throughout the week on our social media pages. This has become a wonderful tradition, thus we ask you to take a few minutes to offer your words of appreciation and encouragement to our educators.
Finally, I want to wish the best of luck to our Coordinator of Music Ben Chertok and the Salem High School Jazz Band the best of luck Sunday when they perform at The Hatch Shell in Boston (between 2-2:30 p.m.) at the Massachusetts Association of Jazz Educators (MAJE) Gold Medal Showcase. For those in need of transportation, register for the fan bus here.
Enjoy the weekend,
Kate Carbone,
Interim Superintendent
This week's Magical Moments That Matter recipient is Ms. Amy Lowd, a reading specialist at the Carlton Innovation School. Said the nomination:
"We believe all members of our community are valued and that our relationships are built on empathy and respect. Mrs. Lowd steps up when others step back. She goes above and beyond her job description so that students and her fellow colleagues are supported."
Congratulations to Ms. Lowd!

The Salem News | In the Circle softball column: Experienced Witches starting to hit their stride
It may be overly simplistic to say Salem High’s softball changed with one swing of the bat. Then again, it was a pretty big swing. The game was tied in the final inning, two runners were on base ... and the count was even full. Junior catcher Julia Gauthier dug in, swung hard and blasted the ball out of the park for a game-winning 3-run homer.

May 1, 2026: National School Principals Day
Salem Public Schools is looking into the future and developing a 10-year Innovation vision and a three-year strategic plan to guide our work. To shape our efforts, we want to hear from parents, caregivers, students, alumni and community members to better understand:

- Where we can grow as a district?
- What matters most for our students and families?
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by Monday, May 4 to share your thoughts. Your feedback will directly inform the priorities we set and the path we take forward together. For more information on the Innovation Vision and Strategic Planning process, go to salemk12.org/innovation.
