Parent Book-It Surveys

As you have heard (at parent/teacher conferences or at our Bingo night) we are considering moving away from the Accelerated Reader testing program for next year. Before we make that move, we want to get feedback from YOU, our parents. If you have not had the opportunity to take the parent survey for Book-It, please click the link that pertains to you (click both if you have children in both grade levels) and help us by providing answers to four simple questions. Thank you so much for your time!

Kindergarten Round-Up

Any child turning 5 on or before July 31st, 2022 is eligible for kindergarten!! If you plan on sending your child to Shelby-Rising City Kindergarten next fall, please call Camille in our school's office at (402) 527-5946 ext 5717 and provide your name, your child's name, their birthday, and your address to register and be added to our mailing list to receive additional information as the school year approaches.

We will hold Kindergarten Registration on Friday, April 22nd. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available. The kindergarten handbook will be reviewed, registration forms will be handed out (to be completed by the 22nd (or even that same day if you'd like!)). Parents are encouraged to bring:

  • kindergarten physical documentation - that can be completed by any physician,
  • up to date immunization records, and
  • child's original birth certificate issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics (we will make a copy for our records).

Letters confirming your registration session will be mailed on or around April 11th.

End of the Year Testing is Coming!!

Below you will find a calendar of our end of the year testing. Please check it out and mark your home calendar with the dates that your child's grade level will be testing. We encourage you to make sure your child gets a good night's rest the night before testing and eats a healthy breakfast that morning. Please remember that our doors open at 8:00 for breakfast each morning!

Notice - we will ALWAYS try to avoid testing on a Monday as that is our day to get back into the 'swing of things' each week at school. We will also do our best to catch up on any missed testing each Friday so students that missed testing on any given day throughout the week will not continue to fall behind as the weeks of testing go by. If you have ANY questions about the testing calendar, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Thompson at 402-527-5946 ext 5718.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is when a child is born with an extra or partial chromosome 21, research is yet to find an answer as to why this takes place. The additional genetic material alters the course of development leading to delays in physical and mental development. It is the most common chromosomal defect in the United States, affecting one of every 700 babies. Every person with Down Syndrome is a unique individual and may possess different levels of characteristics to different degrees or not at all.

Since Down Syndrome effects the 21st chromosome, it is celebrated around the world by wearing CrAzY socks on the 21st of March. Please join S-RC's Circle of Friends as they lead us in spreading their message of awareness, acceptance, and inclusion and wear YOUR CrAzY socks on 3-21-22!!

Kindergarten

We just finished one of the My Weirder School books where poor Mr. Sunny had his sanderpiece RUINED at the last minute and A.J. had to prove he DIDN'T have a crush on Andrea. We decided to try a new series. I am excited to expose my kindergarten friends to the antics of Junie B. Jones in book 1 of her series; Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus!

1st, 2nd, 3rd

Students have loved hearing all about Judy's favorite pet, Jaws (which happens to be a Venus fly trap)! Judy has fed it a dead fly, a live ant, and even some raw hamburger meat. We are on the edge of our seats to find out what will happen next. Prior to this book, we finished Mr. Sunny is Funny AND Mr. Granite is From Another Planet!

4th & 5th

We just finished our first book, Zorgamazoo and then read a fun picture book Grumpy Monkey. Today, March 1st, we started Wonder. Students were literally laughing out loud when they heard about the nurse that Auggie's mom had the night he was born. You should definitely ask your 4th or 5th grader why!!
