Middle School Math: The Power of Persistence!
What happens when you take a two-digit number, multiply its digits together, and keep going? Our mid-level students have been exploring a fascinating math concept called multiplicative persistence!
The challenge was to start with a two-digit number, multiply its digits, and then repeat the process with each new number until reaching a single digit. The goal? Find a number with the greatest possible persistence!
For example, starting with 77:
77 → 7 × 7 = 49 → 4 × 9 = 36 → 3 × 6 = 18 → 1 × 8 = 8
It takes four rounds of multiplication to reach a single digit, giving 77 a multiplicative persistence of 4!
Our mathematicians tested a variety of numbers, looking for ways to push the process as far as possible. Along the way, they practiced multiplication, number sense, and—most importantly—persistence! Sometimes the best math challenges are the ones that make us keep going, even when we aren't sure what we'll find.
Hearts & Hands at GES
It truly takes a community to make a small school thrive! From committee work and helping host school events to lending a hand in the classroom or tackling a maintenance project, our volunteers make a meaningful difference in the daily life of GES. Your time, talents, and generosity help create the special place our school community has become.
A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has already volunteered their time and energy this school year. We are so grateful for the many ways our families and community members show up for our learners!
Looking for a way to get involved? Whether you have an hour to spare, a special skill to share, or simply a willingness to lend a hand, there are opportunities to make a difference. Check out the opportunities below and see if something might be right up your alley. We would love to have you join us!
Help Us Build Our Morphology Wall!
The mid level Language Arts classroom is creating a morphology wall! Well, technically, the wall is already there—but it could use a little help bringing it to life. Rachael is looking for a volunteer to help hang the prefixes, suffixes, and roots/bases our middle-level learners have been studying. This growing wall will serve as a visual reference for students as they explore how words are built and how understanding word parts can unlock meaning.
Volunteer skill needed: Comfort working on a midsize ladder is a must! If you're comfortable on a ladder, and willing to lend a hand, we'd love your help making our word wall come together.
Have a Fridge to Spare?
Good news! GES has received a grant to help provide healthy snacks for our learners. Now we just need a place to keep them fresh! We're looking for a donated refrigerator to give our healthy snack program a home.
Do you have a spare garage fridge that's ready for a new adventure? We'd love to give it a second life at GES! If you have one you'd be willing to donate, please reach out. Thank you for helping us keep our learners fueled and ready to learn!

Holiday Reminder
As we approach the Halloween season, we wanted to take a moment to address our school's approach to this holiday. At GES, we understand and respect the diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs of our families. We recognize that some of our families choose to celebrate Halloween, while others do not. In light of this, we want to clarify our school's stance on this matter.
As a school, GES does not officially celebrate holidays. However, we fully respect everyone's choices to do so in their personal lives. We believe in fostering an inclusive and understanding community where every individual's traditions and beliefs are honored.
With this in mind, please note that while we will not be organizing any Halloween celebrations or activities at school, we are more than happy to allow students to wear school appropriate costumes if they choose.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
