Happy Monday MES Families!

This month, our character value is being TRUSTWORTHY! We talked a bit about this in our kickoff assembly last Friday, and will be reviewing it with students all month long! It's a great topic of conversation to have at home as well!

Our primary students can choose to participate in Lunchtime Theater! It replaces outside playtime during their lunch recess and is up to them if they'd like to participate. The next round started today with a focus on Dia de Los Muertos based on Coco!

October is also safety month! We continue to work on safety in our parking lot, and need to remember the following:

  • For drop off, students should be able to exit the vehicle quickly and independently from the passenger side of the car. They can exit their car anywhere along our sidewalk inside the lot and don't need to wait to reach the "front" of the line.
  • Students should ONLY be dropped off from a car at the curb. I've seen several students weave between cars, which isn't safe!
  • If you park in the lot for drop off or pick up, please make sure to park correctly, and then use the marked crosswalk only. If we have people crossing at multiple spots, it slows our traffic flow.

Please remember that School starts at 8:15! We continue to have LOTS of students arriving after this time! Work together as a family in the morning to have your child arrive on time in the morning, ready for instruction! Mrs. Calvert and I are out in the morning and we have noticed that there is a huge gap in traffic around 8:05, so arriving a bit earlier makes that car lane even better as well! We can do it Sea Lions!

Here's to a wonderful week ahead!

Alan Salazar (Puchuk Ya'in'c) spoke to our students last week! He has been a traditional storyteller, an Indigenous educator, an Indigenous monitor/consultant, a traditional paddler and builder of Chumash canoes, and a preschool teacher ... His family has traced their family ancestry to the Chumash village of Ta’apu, now known as Simi Valley and the Tataviam village of Chaguayanga near Castaic, Ca. They are Ventureno Chumash and Fernandeno Tataviam. His ancestors were brought into the San Fernando Mission starting in 1799. He actively protects his ancestors’ village sites and tribal territories.

Student Birthday Parties (from the Parent Handbook)

Such observances must be coordinated with the classroom teacher and should occur after lunch or at the end of the day. Food may be distributed at school. Healthier options should be encouraged. Cakes or very sweet treats (Sugar-based foods) are NOT allowed. All-natural popsicles are the ONLY choice for birthday celebrations. Our SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services Wellness Policy calls for staff to limit student consumption of sugar at school. No nuts, if there is a peanut allergy in the classroom. Party favors are ok to distribute. Birthday invitations for parties away from school may not be distributed unless every student in the class is invited.

5th Grade Pali Camp Overnight Field Trip is NEXT WEEK - FINAL PUSH for donations!

We are excited for our 2025-2026 5th grade class to again have the opportunity to attend outdoor school in October 2025. Outdoor school is perhaps the greatest highlight of elementary school for many students and is a sort of rite-of-passage. We are asking 5th grade parents to donate now so that we may make our next installment payment.

All or None

If we don’t raise enough funds for ALL students to participate, we will ask the PTA to fund the difference. If there is not enough available funds or support from PTA, then the trip will be canceled; we will refund all donations but lose our original PTA deposit. Also, to help prevent canceling the trip, any families who won’t be able to voluntarily contribute the full $560 will be asked what if anything they can donate. Perhaps $300, $200 or $50? Anything helps. Finally if there are families who would like to cover another student, we will accept donations above and beyond $560.

Trip Date

  • Trip date: 10/15/25-10/17/25
