Thurgood Marshall Middle School Community Message

Dear Thurgood Marshall MS Families:

First, a heartfelt thank you to our TMMS parents and family members who came out last week to support our boys’ baseball team and girls’ softball team. Your presence, encouragement, and positive energy made a meaningful difference for our student-athletes and demonstrated the strength of the TMMS community. We appreciate your continued partnership and support as we encourage our Tigers to Work Hard, Play Hard, and represent TMMS with pride!

Second, as of Monday, October 5, 2026, all Thurgood Marshall Middle School students are expected to power off and store all cell phones and personal electronic devices in their assigned lockers for the entire school day. Students may not use devices for texting, calling, gaming, music, photography, video recording, or social media, and AirPods, earbuds, and headphones may not be worn in classrooms or hallways unless specifically authorized for instructional or testing purposes. All students have received a locker and are expected to follow these expectations each day.

Third, we are excited to welcome TMMS parents and family members to our Open House on Thursday, October 15, 2026, for an opportunity to connect with our school community and experience teaching and learning at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. The Parent Welcome will take place from 8:30–9:10 a.m. in the Media Center, followed by MOD 1 classroom visits from 9:15–10:15 a.m. and MOD 2 classroom visits from 10:20–11:20 a.m. We look forward to seeing our TMMS families as we partner together to support student success and continue building a culture of Excellence Without Excuse!

Fourth, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Thurgood Marshall Middle School will host a student assembly on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of the Hispanic community. That evening, we invite students and families to join us for International Heritage Night from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as we celebrate the diverse cultures that make our TMMS community special! Additional information will be shared during the week of October 12–16, 2026, and we look forward to celebrating with you!

Fifth, Join us on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. as Thurgood Marshall Middle School takes on Hyattsville Middle School in the PGCPS Science Bowl, an exciting science game show that challenges students’ scientific knowledge and skills. Come cheer on our Tigers as they represent TMMS with pride and compete for Science Bowl glory at the Bonnie Johns Educational Media Center, 8437 Landover Road, Landover, MD 20785!

Sixth, at Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) provides a proactive, schoolwide framework for explicitly teaching, reinforcing, and recognizing behaviors that support a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. Tiger Bucks, in which students will be able to use at the P.B.I.S. School Store, will serve as a school-wide incentive system, allowing students to earn recognition for attendance, positive behavior, and academic achievement, reinforcing the TMMS I.C.A.R.E. values of Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.

Seventh, the school-wide reading initiative known as Reading in the Zone is off to a great start. All students and staff are required to have a book to read. The TMMS 30-minute “Reading in the Zone” block will provide students with consistent opportunities to build reading stamina, comprehension, and academic vocabulary through both free choice and content-based readings. Students may bring a book from home, select a book from their classroom library, or check out a book from the school library to enjoy during this dedicated reading time. Together, we can build a culture of reading and help our Tigers become stronger, more confident readers!

Eighth, during school spirit Friday's, students will be allowed to wear their favorite Team Jersey (e.g., American Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Thurgood Marshall MS Paraphernalia, etc.) over top of their grade-level polo shirt, every Friday, to promote school spirit. Students are still expected to wear their regular grade level uniform.

Ninth and finally, please review information in the Thurgood Marshall Middle School Information Center to receive important updates from Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), and Prince George's County Government.

Being Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity. At Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), we are committed to addressing chronic absenteeism with urgency and purpose by identifying and removing attendance barriers that prevent students from being engaged and present every day, in every class, and for every opportunity to learn. During School Year 2025–2026, TMMS had a chronic absenteeism rate of 41%, meaning that 41% of students missed 10% or more of the school year. Our three-year goal is to reduce chronic absenteeism by 9 percentage points each year, decreasing the rate to 32% by the end of SY 2026–2027 school year. Students can achieve their attendance goal each marking period (Quarters 1–4) by missing no more than two days per quarter and no more than eight days throughout the school year. Students who earn perfect attendance each marking period will be recognized and celebrated for their commitment to being “Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity.”

Once students reach the following attendance data points for the year, a formal letter will be generated and emailed to parents providing student attendance data and requesting a formal meeting with the grade level administrator, principal & State of MD Truancy Project Coordinator:

  • Quarter 1 - 4.5 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)

  • Quarter 2 - 9.0 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)

  • Quarter 3 - 13.5 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)

  • Quarter 4 - 18 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom, and added to Tier 3 Attendance List for upcoming school year)

We ask all parents/guardians to partner with TMMS to make sure their student is “Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity.”
