Superintendent'sUpdateMay 8, 2026

Dear CCPS Families,

As we enter the final stretch of the school year with just over a month remaining, there is a tremendous sense of pride and momentum throughout our district.

Our spring sports season is wrapping up, and I am excited to share that regional competitions have officially begun this week. Please join me in cheering on our student-athletes as they represent our community with dedication and spirit.

We also recently celebrated the Unified Bocce Tournament for the Special Olympics, where our students did an outstanding job showcasing the power of inclusion, teamwork, and athletic excellence.

Last week was particularly special for our seventh graders, who had a blast participating in the Cecil County Agricultural Education Days from April 28th through the 30th. This event was a resounding success, offering our students an incredible opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the field to discover the vital role agriculture plays in our community. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the generous sponsors, dedicated organizers, and local farmers whose hard work and passion made this experience possible. We are deeply grateful for the community support that fuels these opportunities.

As we navigate these final weeks, please be sure to check the newsletters sent home from your child’s individual school building for updates on the many exciting year-end events ahead.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.

Get ready for an evening where wonder meets wellness at Elkton High School tonight, Friday, May 8, at 5:00 p.m. for the "Magic of Hope" show! We are thrilled to host Anthony Grupido, a master magician and mental health advocate who uses mind-blowing illusions to share an inspiring message of resilience that resonates with all ages. The excitement continues after the final curtain call with a community resource fair, raffles, and plenty of family activities to keep the energy high. We’ve even got dinner covered with food and refreshments available for everyone, so bring the whole family out for a night of world-class entertainment and meaningful community connection.

This month’s edition of the Cecil County Connections newsletter has a wealth of information about events in the county, connections to local resources, and much more inside. Have you heard about Sun Bucks for children? You can find the answer in this month’s edition. Would you like information about free sports physicals for students? That information is in this newsletter as well. If you don’t find the information in the newsletter about local services you may need, the link to finding help in Cecil County, Maryland is available as well.

Celebrate America’s 250th with the "Off the Beaten Path" Challenge! Celebrate America’s 250th with the "Off the Beaten Path" Challenge!

In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, the Historical Society of Cecil County invites you to join the "Off the Beaten Path" challenge, a county-wide adventure designed to uncover our local hidden treasures. In collaboration with local preservationists and government officials, the Society has curated a list of 27 historically significant sites—from well-known landmarks to tucked-away gems—to honor our nation's 250th anniversary. To participate, simply pick up a passport at any Cecil County Library branch, the Historical Society, Cecil County Tourism, or the Fair Hill Nature Center. Participants are encouraged to visit these sites and take a selfie at each location or marker as proof of their journey. Before heading out, adventurers are encouraged to check each site’s website for hours and potential entry fees, though all locations have been vetted for safe roadside pull-over areas.

This challenge is a fantastic way for families to engage with local heritage, featuring a special category for younger explorers; children under 14 who complete 14 visits will earn a Junior Historian Certificate and a gift. Completed passports and photo evidence must be submitted to the Historical Society at 135 East Main St., Elkton, by December 1, 2026, to be eligible for a prize. Submissions are accepted on Mondays and Thursdays from 10–4 and the first Saturday of every month from 10–2. Supported by local partners, including Cecil County Tourism and the Public Library, this event promises a year of discovery and community pride. For full details and to start your journey, visit www.cecilhistory.org.
