Important Message from the Nurse
A Friendly Reminder About Visits to the School Nurse
As we continue through the school year, we wanted to share a quick reminder about visits to the health office and when families are contacted. Our school nurse is here to help keep students healthy, comfortable, and ready to learn each day.
Students may stop by the health office for a variety of common reasons such as:
- Small cuts, scrapes, or bumps 🩹
- Headaches or stomachaches 🤕
- Not feeling well 🤒
- Ice packs, bandages, or other basic first aid 🧊🩹
- Scheduled medications 💊
- Support for ongoing health needs like asthma, allergies, or other treatments 🩺
- A quick check when a teacher notices a student isn’t feeling their best 😊
Many of these visits are quick, and students are able to return to class shortly after receiving care.
When You’ll Hear From Us 📞🏥
Not every visit requires a call home, but we will contact parents/guardians if:
- Your child has a fever or illness symptoms that may require going home 🤒
- Your child has a head injury 🤕
- There is a more significant injury that may need medical follow-up 🩺❤️🩹
- Your child vomits or continues to feel unwell 🤒
- There is a medication concern or reaction 💊
- The nurse feels your child should be picked up from school 🏥
- The nurse may also use judgment to call on other unusual things (student never visits nurse, or anything that may require monitoring by parents)
For minor bumps, scrapes, or soreness, students are often treated with basic first aid such as cleaning the area, applying a bandage, or using an ice pack before returning to class. As with many everyday injuries, symptoms can sometimes become more noticeable later in the day, so we encourage families to keep an eye on how their child is feeling after school.
If you ever have questions about your child’s visit to the health office or have a health concern about your child that you feel the nurse should be aware of, please feel free to reach out. You can contact Nurse Holly at email hferrante@olatheschools.org or #913-780-7485, or contact the front office at 913-780-7480
Our goal is always to keep students safe and comfortable while helping them return to learning as quickly as possible. We truly appreciate your partnership in keeping our students healthy and ready to learn! 💙🏥🩹❤️🩹

Final Week for Cereal Drive
It's not a coincidence that our final week to collect boxes of cereal for our Breakfast for Brains cereal drive starts with National Cereal Day! We are more than half way to our goal! All cereal donations will go to local food pantry's and will have an impact on the community. Help us hit our goal of 400 and send those boxes of cereal in!
Returning Huskie Form
Every year we send home "Returning Huskie Forms from Mrs. Cole" with your students. These forms help to give an insight into what you would like from your students classroom environment for the following school year. Your answers to the questions on the form are very helpful as my team, and I begin creating class lists for the 2026-2027 school year. Please take some time and fill this form out and return it to the front office or your students teacher. You can also email the filled out form to Jenn Lewis, jalewis@olatheschools.org.
The form is attached if you need a fresh one. Thank you so much for taking the time to get this done!
