Hooker Oak PBIS Highlight — 8-Week Series
Week 2: The Power of Positive Attention
Catch Them Being Good!
One of the most important parts of PBIS is recognizing students when they are demonstrating the behaviors we want to see. At Hooker Oak, we intentionally look for opportunities to notice and acknowledge students who are being safe, respectful, and responsible.
Why? Because children are more likely to repeat behaviors that receive positive attention.
At school, staff might say:
"Thank you for being responsible by cleaning up your area."
or
"You were being respectful when you listened while your classmate was speaking."
Try it at home: Aim to "catch" your child doing something right. Be specific about what they did and which expectation it demonstrates.
🌱 "You were being responsible by remembering your backpack this morning!"
🌱 "That was respectful—you gave your brother a turn."
Specific praise teaches children exactly what behavior you want them to repeat.
