First Grade News
It’s hard to believe that the end of the year is upon us! Your child has learned so much! First grade has had so much fun learning about animals and their habitats over the last month. Soon, we will be starting a new unit on fairy tales. We will also continue learning reading skills such as spelling patterns, tricky words, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. In math, we will be learning about money, time, and three-dimensional shapes. We are also starting to review skills we have already taught to prepare for the end-of-year tests. End-of-the-year testing will start in the next few weeks. Please make sure your child is getting a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast every day. These two things will help maximize your child's learning experience each day.

Curriculum
The month of April, Kindergarten students continued learning about problem-solving skills. They
learned to say the problem, think of solutions, explore consequences, and pick the best solution. Students
learned to calm strong feelings, if needed, before working on solving a problem. The students had a few homelinks sent home for them to practice these skills with their family. The First-grade students finished the
Second Step lessons and are completing their summative assessment. In preschool, students Al’s Pals lessons consisted of learning how to be a good listener and how to politely interrupt and when to wait until someone is done talking. May Day Celebration
May Day falls on the first of May and marks the halfway point between spring and summer.
May Day is traditionally used to celebrate springtime with flowers. In keeping with this tradition Washington kindergarten and first grade students delivered flowers to the residents of Prestige Care Center. A big thank you to the Hy-Vee floral department for providing the flowers.
