Attendance and Absences Attendance and Absences

If your student is absent, excuse notes must be shared with Ms. Stephens, attendance counselor. To ensure accurate attendance records, please submit attendance excuse notes – including those from a doctor – in one of the following ways:

  • Submit through Aspen Go
  • Send an email to DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
  • Drop off at school (Welcome Center)

Tardy arrivals and early dismissals require a submitted excuse note. You can also reach out to teachers for information about missed assignments.

Tardy Hall

Your student's transition to middle school includes a new responsibility - being on time for each class period each day. Sixth grade students who are late for three or more class periods per week will be required to attend tardy hall on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.

Because students are missing important instruction when they are late for class, students at 6th grade tardy hall will leverage their time to complete missed work and reflect on ways they can ensure on-time arrival moving forward. If your student qualifies for tardy hall, you will be notified by Ms. Watson, 6th grade dean, during the week of their tardy hall assignment.

Homework for Families Homework for Families

Homework Folder Check

Please take a few minutes this week to check and clean out your student’s homework folder. We are noticing that many students are carrying around a large number of papers that no longer need to be in their folders.

As you clean out the folder, please look for the following:

  • Student Handbook: The last page should have been signed and returned to school. The rest of the handbook can stay at home.

  • Technology Form: This should have been signed and returned to school.

  • Teacher Syllabi: These should stay at home unless a teacher has specifically instructed your student to return one.

  • Old papers and completed graded assignments: These can generally be removed and kept at home unless your student has been told otherwise.

Keeping homework folders organized will help students more easily find the assignments and important papers they actually need each day. Thank you for helping your students start the year with good organizational habits!

Agenda Check — Are They Writing Down Their Homework?

Please take a moment to check your student’s agenda! Students are expected to write down their homework and important reminders each day as part of our classroom routine.

Ask your student to show you their agenda and check:

  • Are they writing down their homework each day?

  • Are they recording upcoming assignments, assessments, and due dates?

  • Are they checking their agenda at home to make sure their work gets completed?

Building the habit of using an agenda now will help students become more organized, responsible, and independent throughout the school year. Thank you for helping us reinforce this routine at home!

Substitute Expectations

Please remind your student that classroom expectations do not change when a substitute is present. Students are expected to be respectful, follow directions, stay on task, and complete all assigned work.

A substitute day is not a free day, and students will be held accountable for their choices and behavior. Please reinforce these expectations with your students at home.

Volunteers Needed for the 6th Grade Barbecue

We will host our annual 6th Grade BBQ at Deal on Saturday, October 3 from 11 AM - 1 PM. Please join us and celebrate the start of the school year with students, staff, and families!

We are still in need of volunteers to support the BBQ and we can use all the help we can get! Please use the following link to sign up if you are interested. Sign up here!

Even if you are unable to volunteer, we hope to see you at this special celebration.

Field Trip Chaperones Needed

If you are interested in being considered as a possible chaperone for a curriculum-based field trip this school year, please contact your student's team lead. All potential chaperones must have a current DCPS Volunteer Clearance as of the date of their assigned trip and will have to sign a Chaperone Agreement to attend.

Picture Day Information

Sixth grade students will be photographed on Tuesday, September 22. All students will have their photo taken so that they can be included in our yearbook, even if families do not choose to purchase photos.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

This week in English class, we continued exploring Unit 1, “Characters Who Grow and Change,” by completing our next two fictional readings: Home by Hena Khan and The Scholarship Jacket by Marta Salinas. Through each text, scholars analyzed how the protagonist, or main character, changed as a result of interactions with secondary characters. Scholars concluded the week with a writing lesson focused on how to effectively structure and write a CER paragraph using a claim, evidence, and reasoning.

We’ll begin next week with our first vocabulary quiz of the year. For reference, the vocabulary terms and their meanings are listed below:

  1. Burden: something heavy and hard to carry; a difficult responsibility

  2. Despair: the feeling of having no hope

  3. Dignity: the quality of being worthy of honor and respect

  4. Reluctant: hesitant or unwilling to do something

  5. Reputation: the way people think about someone or something

  6. Trait: a quality or characteristic that makes someone or something distinct

  7. Transform: to change completely

After the vocabulary quiz, we’ll begin reading the next selection in our unit, Thrown by Mike Jung. With this story, scholars will track how the protagonist changes through conflict and dialogue. We’ll conclude the week with our first Unit Skills Assessment of the year. Unit Skills Assessments include two components: multiple-choice questions and a short-response question. Scholars will complete the assessment over the course of two class periods.

Lastly, please ensure that your scholar reads for at least 20 minutes each night. Consistent reading outside of class helps students build stamina, strengthen comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and grow into more confident, independent readers.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

This week, students learned key map vocabulary, identified different types of maps, and began applying their knowledge of the 5 parts of a map.

Next week, we will continue practicing, reviewing, and applying these skills. Students will have multiple opportunities to practice in class, as well as nightly practice to reinforce what we are learning. Please encourage students to complete their nightly practice and ask questions about any skills they are still working to master.

We plan to end the week with our first summative assessment, which will focus on students’ ability to:

  • Identify the continents and oceans

  • Understand and use key map vocabulary

  • Recognize and interpret different types of maps

  • Apply their knowledge of the 5 parts of a map

Math with Mr. Ledix

We’ve had a great week in Math after testing! At this point, 99% of students have finished the Beginning-of-Year iReady diagnostic on their school-issued devices. This important assessment helps us determine appropriate class placements to best support each learner. Most students have been given their iReady diagnostic reports to take home to review with parents. If they do not have it, they should check their Math mailbox in Mr. Ledix's class, for their report.

Students have begun receiving math homework on Pear, accessible via Clever. They should have also begun their “My Path” on i-Ready. Students are responsible for at least one graded lesson a week on i-Ready—although it has been clearly communicated that at least two per week is required if we’d like to reach more “advanced” levels of math understanding. If your child needs help accessing Pear or i-Ready, they are welcome to visit me during recess for support. We appreciate your patience as teachers carefully review the data to make thoughtful decisions.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello Scientists! Congrats on finishing another busy (but short) week! This week, students were introduced to the scientific method and took a pre-test to see where their current understanding is. We also worked on our observation and inference skills, which led us into discussions of independent and dependent variables.

Next week, we will continue our exploration of the scientific method by completing the Hypothesis Exit Ticket formative and by completing our first big lab – the Slime Lab. During the slime lab, students will test how a single independent variable (ingredient or process that they change) affects multiple dependent variables (things that they measure, such as consistency, stretch, and more). This lab will reinforce to students that their experiments throughout science (until very high levels) should only ever have 1 independent variable being altered at a time, while keeping the other variables constant. This allows the students as scientists to more precisely identify cause and effect!

The Slime Lab: Tips for Success

Our famous slime lab will occur on Wednesday, September 16th. As many of you know, slime is a messy project no matter what, so please ensure that your student is wearing clothes that can be washed and that any long hair is tied back to avoid getting it in the slime.

Roots!

The roots for quiz 1.3 are:

  • *Mis = wrong (think mistake, misuse, misunderstanding)
  • *Manu = hand (think manipulate, manuscript, manage)
  • Hyper = over (think hyperactive, hypertension)
  • *Micro = small (think microscopic, microphone)
  • Chrono = time (think chronic, chronological)

*Keepers: uni, bi, tri, pre, post, -ic

Notes from MLL Support

Last week we finished READ 180 Phonics Assessment as a diagnostic and a quiz on the 8 parts of speech. Students have started the Read 180 rotations and will continue with READ 180 on M/W/F and iReady on Thurs/Fri for independent station and start student workbooks at the teacher-led station. Students will also re-take the parts of speech quiz if their first attempts were below a satisfactory score.
